simon.w
SWMBO had a Samsung and found some unlock codes on the net but they wouldn't work as some of the Samsung models have a hardware lock and you actually need to plug a dongle in to unlock them. You will need to go to a shop for this.
pin
All GSM phones can be unlocked with a code typed into the keypad, what you are paying the eastern European fella, or the bloke down the market, is for his ability to find the codes Look for a dodgy looking mobile phone shop, there are about 2 or 3 per high street the length of the country - they normally have someone called igor they keep chained up in the back who will sort you out Alternatively if you have been with your provider for 12 months, ask them for the unlock code Nothing illegal in unlocking a phone

pin
If you can carry it off, you will get it done cheaper. Helps if you know the name of the software used to unlock. Worked for me with Nokia's before. Go up to them, turn on the patter and moan about how you cba to faff about but £10 is taking the mick for 5 seconds work, offer a fiver and most will take it

dunganick
dodgy market geezer it is then ! thanks for the link teal but it wouldnt work dont go with orange mate im leaving them after 6 years because their service is so unreliable. Sometimes it wont let me send texts for up to a day despite full signial. I can make calls but no texts. And if you want to talk to a real person, dream on. Orange...... the first robot run phone company. o2 offer a far better package for what i want (600ish texts a month) Phonecalls and o2 offer very good deals at weekends, and the same deals on week day calls give or take. My friend also couldnt get his contract phone to work at all when we were abroad. Even with my 5 free texts a day on orange for the life of the phone, o2's deal leaves it for dead. pin
All the providers customer service sucks. Don't be fooled by assuming the sales operation's efficiency will be matched by the service arm Mrs P got a new o2 contract phone, ditched that within a week because you can't get to speak to anyone. I was there for the whole thing, she was promised the earth and they just can't deliver. Its all changed again now with Orange, but the major problem with them boils down to two things - Wanadoo/Orange broadband support being brought into the same call centre (agent sharing) and that unless you moan and bitch like hell (or pay them a fortune) you won't be offered the "secret" packages. Its now called "panther" on orange, but for about 2 years its been called "Orange Premier". If you pay enough (large talkplan) or complain and bitch enough, you might get offered this as a "retention deal". It has the same number for support, but it knows your number and puts you through to dedicated premier customer support. I've been on Premier (now Panther) for ages and I get through in 4 rings or less, they can't do enough for you. Most providers are the same these days, phones are a commodity and you get commodity support
