Unusual request for live rabbits.

I was talking to a lady who owns some racing greyhound kennels near to one of my permissions today and the chat eventually came round to the local rabbit population and the lack of rabbits on her land. I told her that the farmer who I shoot for there had asked me to "eliminate" as many rabbits as possible regardless of their size, which could explain the lack of rabbits being seen in the area at the moment. She said that she liked to see rabbits on her land as it encouraged and made the younger greyhounds keener to chase. That I could understand but then she dropped the bomb shell! She asked if I could ferret out and catch as many rabbits as possible and re-release them on her land.

I told her quite clearly and politely that regardless of the legalities/illegalities of releasing live rabbits on anyones land (at their request) I was not willing to do so as it would make me extremely unpopular with the neighbouring farmer as he hates rabbits with a passion and has told me to shoot as many as possible.

I would be interested in other members views on the matter. What are your thoughts guys?

Your reasoning & decision I cannot fault.AFAIK it is illegal but even if legal it would be unwise to get involved:you could lose but hard to see what advantage you could gain.

P.S.Glad I am not the only one to attract eccentrics with strange/illegal shooting requests

I have been asked if I would take some up to cumbria, said no!

They don't have any in the area, sad fact but not my job to restock for others to shoot.

FB you were right 100% all kinds of problems could arise with the introduction of any animal on to a site.

I put a post on here some months ago about hare shooting, and just hope the rabbit population does not go the same way.

I like to think we are more than just shooters and have the interest of the countryside at heart in all we do...as you have shown

You did the right thing FB,and i do not disagree with your descision. However i can see the lady's point, we have none in our area anymore, and although i would not like to see a plague, i would very much like to look at the hedgerows near where i live and see a few out grazing. Its worth noting that at least two of the farms i shoot woodcock on would not mind seeing a few. One of them asks us "not shoot any rabbits you see on my land there are very few about" which of course i respect.

A friend of my son , his father asked me for some live rabbits for the greyhound training and I said that the ferrets kill them. My son went up to the trainers and they had a rabbit in a mesh ball being pushed around by the dogs!!!!
