Guest shooter - Day on the pigeons

Well, after responding to a paid shooting thread on here I was kindly offered a day with P.W member caeser over on his permissions in Yorkshire.

It was an early start, 5 am get up and then a 20 minute drive to the meeting point. Transferred all the gear over into Steve's (wife's car, his discovery was undergoing surgery) and then off we went. It took around 1.5 hours to get to the permission, so we were in for a long day!

The permission Steve has gained over the years in incredible, and the story behind them fascinating! Steve seemed to know EVERYONE in and around the local area, he has built a lot of trust up over the years.

We settled at our first spot, set up and threw out the decoys. We were looking mainly for the pigeon but seem to be inundated with Crows and rooks. Steve shot 4, I shot one (I must say mine was the biggest crow of the day! haha). We decided to move fields in search of the pigeon. We both packed up and hit the tarmac. There wasn't masses of pigeon around and it was difficult deciding where to set up. Anyway, we settle in a field over cut barley on the brow of a rolling hill, backs to the woodland and the sun behind. We could see for miles around, it looked like the perfect spot for some sport! We unloaded, threw the decoys out and waited in anticipation!

We managed 24 pigeon, 6/7 not picked. Neither of us were on top form with the shooting, but we had a cracking day, nattering, laughing and we even managed to squeeze a couple of cold bitter shandys in at the pub later on!

Thanks for the opportunity - May it continue for other members of P.W.

All the best,

Well I hope you enjoyed it ,thats the main thing. :good:

It was a stifling hot day. A lot slower than I was hoping for, but you never can tell.

The worst thing was the midgies. Never seen so many, like a small cloud in front of your face all day long. And then some really tiny things, thousands of them crawling all over us.

You've missed a couple of blacks out in the count up. 7 at the first spot, if you remember, not 5.

My missus had a bit of a shock at the car.(It's a Rav4. Pretend offroader) There was all bits of barley sticking out the front and underneath, and the inside was full of cleaver seeds stuck everywhere, and bits of hay and grass etc. Not to mention, the splattering up both sides.

So I spent all day today cleaning it putting it back to a road car, not an off road car.

I just want to mention again, that ,although it was in the Paid shooting session, I wasn't asking anyone to pay for the shooting, it was just to share the fuel costs, as Chris will verify.

Just one more thing, a big thanks Chris for the last minute surprise with the bottle, that was really nice.

Yes the midges certainly got their feed! I looked similar to the elephant man at work today! The Rav did its job...and I had a feeling the Mrs would have you cleaning it today, inside and out!

Just to clarify, there was no payment for shooting. We shared fuel costs and Steve even gave me a discount as we used the less thirsty Rav4!

Top bloke, and when another offer pops up on P.W make sure you apply!

Thanks again, enjoy the Rioja!
