Dead-Eyed Duck
Looks to me like a Melanistic type. Smaller than the 'normal' English pheasant. Used to be all the rage for releasing some years ago, but they sod off all over the countryside and are difficult to keep on home ground. A keeper friend of mine says that they have '10 Mile Boots'. ChrisNicholls
We released a reasonable number of these melanistic birds on our shoot last season, big mistake, never again. They hung around ok, that was not the problem, the problem was getting the things to fly at a shootable height, they just did not want to know. This season we have gone back to the more normal type of ringnecks and they have put the dark ones to shame.
Ferretboy111
Complete opposite for my shoot, the black ones fly an absolute treat, really good! They hang about aswell, and apparently breed well once wild. Ill be wanting to buy them again next year! Alex

Judging from the fact that large numbers of them are always feeding in the same places, they don't appear to be straying very far.
Lord Geordie
yes its a Melanistic one, shot it three miles from where they where released By lad Dazza what ammo are you using? A 3 mile shot that must be some chokes on your shotgun for a tight pattern at THAT range Good shooting Bud and nice pics too LG
harryhawk
Looks like a japanese green( Phasianus versicolor versicolor) to me, smaller framed but boy do they fly( and run). It's their national bird the kiji I think they were a favorite over on the flat east anglia fenland a while back, where there isn't any natural height to show good birds. Lovely looking birds, hold just as well as any other bird, do seem to fly better. Cant comment on how they eat.
