strangford wildfowler
Have been looking around/scouting for ducks and have noticed not a great deal of mallard and teal are staying on the foreshore, these birds all seem to be heading for fed ponds. My question is should I shoot the birds flighting into the pond or out of the pond as I thought this is the only way I'm going to get any sport this season All the best Strangford wildfowler. Big Mat
Give them a chance on the foreshore, we're only 10 days into the season!
strangford wildfowler
That is true big mat, but every bird in the lough is going to ponds to get hammered will give the foreshore a go on Saturday might get lucky and get a goose insted. kent
Same is true most years. Needs the inland ponds to freeze before foreshore marshes are at their best and most of the birds haven't even left their home turf on the migration, have yet to see any widgeon personally
Barls2-9-12
I have seen more birds on the shore this September than I have for many years. Can only be a good sign
edenman
I have seen more birds on the shore this September than I have for many years. Can only be a good sign I agree, there is a lack of water in the pools and ponds up here resulting in more birds being on the shore. Happy days indeed. Happy days indeed. That could be the reason. There seems to large numbers of teal about and at the weekend I did see some big bunches of wigeon and a lot of pintail. Penelope
What has the weather been like in the far north and north east? Generally the deciding factor in when and how much. That could be the reason. There seems to large numbers of teal about and at the weekend I did see some big bunches of wigeon and a lot of pintail. Barls2-9-12
We do normally get a influx of birds early season but they move off. But this year they are still about.
strangford wildfowler
There has been some heavy rain in northern ireland and has filled all the flight ponds
Big Al
Patience. It'll come. Wait for the migrants. Nothing unusual. Its usually the same at the start of the season on Strangford. Try looking where fresh water streams run into the lough on a dropping tide. Today would have been good for fowling Its pouring rain and blowing a gale but no shooting on a Sunday :-(
Dr D
You have your work cut out for you on strangford. Too many ponds drawing birds off the lough and too few wigeon.
strangford wildfowler
Your right DR D there r to many ponds, and again your right about the wigeon I've only seen wigeon in good numbers down at dundrum bay. Although there is a good head of geese about at the mo they are far to high for a shot, what's it like up your way at the minute?
