kent
Get a different gun to comply with Scottish legislation regs on 100 grn IMO. Too long
njc110381
Should have bought a 6.5x55.... Sorry, couldn't resist getting that in! On a serious note Fister makes a very good point. I doubt it's possible unless you can find something with a Tungsten core, and they are unlikely to expand much or be anywhere near cheap. That's assuming they even exist in such a small calibre? Edit...The bullet that came to mind was the Barnes MRX, but they only come in .270+ calibres. oz1982
Hi Guys thanks for all the info!! What calibre do you think would be the easiest to find non toxic for?? .270? i ask as it looks like i'm getting a new rifle
henry931
I'd vote for the 6.5x55mm Swedish too. The tikka and sako rifles have nice fast 8" twist barrels. For example Will shoot something like a 130gr TSX at about 2600fps easily for 1950 ftlb Energy (I assume this is for deer?) (Just taking rough numbers from the hodgdon manual you could probably get another 200fps with the right powder and a warm load) A .260 would do a similar thing but doesn't quite have as much capacity
henry d
Why do you need non tox? Will the ballistics still be legal for the quarry?
russian sniper
Is it something to do with the forestry commission???
kent
If you want a range of bullets I doubt anything competes with a 30 cal, my choice would be .308 win for availability
cooter
Not a .243 but, I tried some Varmint Grenades in my .223, as they were the only none toxic I could find, for removing foxes in a bird sanctuary. The VG's needed to be pushed hard and, to quote someone else, "they have the same BC as a cornflake", and were totally useless at anything over 100yds. Using them was the only time I had a fox get back up after being shot in the engine room. In the end it was agreed that I could use ballistic tipped bullets, as it was very unlikely there was anything left for the birds to eat, and it would only be one bird if there was. Blunderbust
Go .30 cal (.308) and you can use the various Barnes TSX or TTSX . I am starting to work on a load for my 300 win mag using the 180 gr TTSX and I am doing the same with the .243 using the Hornady GMX 80 gr. If the Hornady don't work I will be trying the Barnes TTSX in 80 gr or the TSX in 85 gr.
henry931
.30-06 is a nice cartridge too
kent
.30-06 is a nice cartridge tooIt is and superior to the .308 with heavier 30cal bullets, these non toxic are light though so advantage is lost for a long action and more powder
njc110381
If you're getting a new rifle will you be keeping the .243? If yes I'd go for a .308, if not a 6.5x55.
