Wine questions

I have made a Damson wine port style,

 

8lb Damsond,3lb sugar,1gallon water,1g prepared yeast.

 

It has now stopped fermenting but on the hydrometer it says "Start wine" is this because it will be so sweet?

 

Is there any other way I can find out its strength? Or am I being a spaz and missing something simple?

Did you take a reading at the start?
