Just a thought...how long will you be given to acquire whatever you have slots for.

I got my HMR first but could not afford both guns of choice at once so am waiting for funds to increase for second purchase.

If the slot is still empty at renewal then you may get asked if needed.

I've an empty .308 slot just waiting for the right gun at the right money - have been for 4 months.

For the life of the ticket, on renewal, lack of funds wont wash as a good reason for not purchasing. In most FEO'S opinion, if you really needed it you'd have got it!

Definitely get both. The situation on the ground changes season to season and year to year. Up until two years ago when disease and the weather collapsed rabbit numbers I was shooting 5-600 a year. I could sit and wait at a good spot at dawn and dusk and shoot all I could carry. Or I could walk round and guarantee a bunch every time. The HMR ruled the roost then and the .22 gathered dust. Now the rabbits are thin on the ground and its not worth sitting out for two hours for one or two rabbits. But it is worth walking round after dark with NV. For that job the .22lr is undisputed king.

Neither calibre is better than the other, they're just different and tend to get used in phases. If you've got both there's nothing you can't cover.

as gimlet said if you have both your covered, but i have had 2 hmrs and sold them both and now have 2 .22s,1 daytime,1 nightvision and find theres nothing i cant do with them that i couldnt do with the hmrs

it all depends on your land and how far away you want/need to be to shoot rabbits,i find i can headshoot rabbits at 120yds if necassary which is more than enough for me as i like to try and stalk into them, but if you want/need to shoot further distances then the hmr is the one you want

i personally think the .22 will hone your fieldcraft skills alot more and also you will learn alot more about holdover than with the hmr,and without a doubt the .22 is the better option for nightshooting imo

I definitely agree you need more skill with a .22.

The .22 was my first gun but in honesty it knocked my confidence a little. It was the ricochets, impossible to guarantee they won't occur and every time I pulled the trigger I always had that niggle. That said, if I could afford a NV, I could see my LR being used a lot more. As it is, I prefer my .17. Much easier to "point and shoot" - day or night. It looks beautiful with the thumbhole stock (CZ 455) but you could get that in .22 anyway.

In addition, I do want to (eventually) get into deer stalking. I have the land suitable for fox and deer shooting so my next variation will be for either a 22-250 or a 223 for the foxes. From there I want to get some deer stalking experience and finally make the variation for a 243 or larger so I can stalk on my own. The logical process IMO is to steadily increase the size of the cal. i'm using and to show the police that I haven't just gone straight in at the deep end and have slowly increased my experience on various rifles and animals.

Man shooting is expensive.

That's what I thought but my pal said just go for it all at the same time so currently I'm just waiting for the FAC to actually arrive so I can collect my CZ Brno for £50 off a pal and I also need to find about £500 for a .243 for the local foxes!! :)

When I had my .22lr I enquired about what you need to do for a .243 and the lady was really helpful and said stick with a .22 for now until I have some stalking experience. I thought that meant a .22LR, not 22-250 or 223 so I stuck with rimfire, making the variation for the hmr and wmr as I was undecided. Only after I'd made the variation I found out I could probably have gone for a 22-250 or 223 straight off.

Seems like a good price babs, I paid over £400 for my 455 hmr.
