Driven day

Recommended Posts

100 bird day 10 guns (say) 6 drives = less than 2 birds each per drive

Watch out for the 'extras'

I shoot quite a few 100 bird days, most with 8 guns but some with 10 guns. I can normally remember every bird I shoot, I like everyone else pick out the high and difficult birds you might get a 4 to 1 ratio so every drive you fire maybe 10 shots. As always it's not about the birds shot it seeing the dogs work the birds flying well and the laugh you have with the beaters and other guns.

Indeed but the things to watch are who you shoot with, you get whole teams who know each other and know they will just shoot good birds but if you buy a couple of pegs things can get acrimonious if you have any greedy guns about. Obviously you get better pegs than others so can't just say a couple of birds a drive but if the birds are there you have to really either cut the day short or pay for extras

All of these `made up` days are a potential minefield !

If your lucky it`ll be a great day out, often people go home unhappy due to

other guns behaviour though.

Caveat emptor definitely applies.

A couple of shoots I know refuse to sell days for this reason. Although big (and expensive) they are not run for commercial gain, but really for the benefit of the Guns. As such, whilst they must cover professional keepering costs, they don't turn a huge profit and any excess money is spent on the nosebag & grog. No doubt they could reduce their annual subscription by selling days or individual pegs on an ad hoc basis, but they have always refused in case it gets finger-pointy after the final drive.
