Hello from hungover in Banbury!

Hi all, I've been looking for a good forum that's geared towards rough shooting as well as the other forms and think I may have found it!!

Was out this morning with a mate but all I had was two rabbits with mixy :-( not exactly any skill needed there....mind you, despite an early morning tramp round the fields I still feel like I've been dug up!

I've been rough shooting for about 18 months now and had my license and own shottie for about 6 months

It's a Bettinsoli 20 bore and I love it. The closest I could get to the balance of a silver pigeon without spending over £550 (so not very close but it's still a lovely light gun)

I do have a question if anyone can help?

I feed about 70% of my kills to my snakes (no I'm not a weirdo covered in tattoos and piercings!), but whilst I know it would take a lot of ingested lead to cause a problem for my animals, I want to start using steel shot

What kind of markings do I need to look for on the gun to find out if it's proofed for steel?

Thanks all

Helen

Hi and welcome. I'm from Banbury originally and now living in stow.

Do you just rough shoot or clays as well? I enjoy A bit of everything airguns too. MG

You escaped!!

I'm originally from a village called Brill the other side of Bicester but moved here for a job

I have shot clays a couple of times but I'll be honest, I find it a bit monotonous

Rough shooting for me is awesome, we tend to go out for about 4 hours on average but we don't have any decoys nor have we figured out any flight paths so we just tramp around and keep our eyes and ears open.

I won't shoot anything I can't use (like crows or magpies), I'll only ever go for grey squirrel, rabbit or pigeon

I've been reading some threads on here and notice people shoot pheasant/partridge etc when it's in season but not on a paid for shoot....

What's the score with that?

We've never really sat down and discussed it with our landowner, so would we need to have permission to shoot game (in season of course)?

Does the landowner own the game on his land even if it's not maintained and no paid for shoots are organised?

We've seen so many ducks and pheasant recently and we've just assumed we don't have the right to shoot them?

I did escape! Haha!

On the land I shoot, they have a syndicate so during the season all game birds are off limits except the coots as they are harmful to the ducks. However out of season the farmer regards the left over pheasants as pests eating his crops.

I have heard of the beaters on some shoots shooting the game behind the line of guns.

I'm still quite new to all this and I'm sure some of the more experienced will fill us both in on this.

That's a sensible way of doing things.

The landowner are currently going through a stressful time so I will probably hold off my questions to them until after Christmas

The land is a cattle farm so I won't be able to use the crop damage 'argument'!!
