I was told by a farmer it was mustard growing through the rape and it dies off and fertilises the ground to help the rape. Quite a few farms have done it round my way, last year pigeons where going mad for it

Mustard is often grown to fertilize fields but never heard of it being allowed to die off , its ploughed in when its green to put nitrogen into the land.

If it was left to die it would self seed and contaminate any cereals / rape etc to be grown on that field

Charlock is a member of the mustard family however.
