bullet boy
I'm on the lookout for a decent NV unit for Ratting in a Barn/Shed. I don't want the Nite-Site NS200 so what do you recommend please for use with Air-Rifle? Thankyou.

Zetter
Hi Ya Why not take a look at the pitch black night vision unit thats advertised by best fittings www.bestfittings.co.uk I bought one for my mate and if you can get over the fact it looks like a VCR cassette on top of you gun its really good. Not trailing wires like my NS50 and you can make the reticule what you like. Also cheaper than the NS50 with more range all in all a lovely little unit does what it says on the tin without costing the earth or waiting forever as you would with a Photon. ATB Neil I also own the Pitchblack NV scope, its an excellent piece of kit, and great value for the money, mine is mounted on my hw100 kt.177 and with H&N Hunters Extreme .177 pellets is good for both rabbits & Rats. atb brian

bullet boy
Like the sound of either a Cobra Merlin or Yukon Photon.
steve_b_wales
Cobra Merlin is brilliant, and of course, it can be mounted to different rifles. It's best used with a parallax adjustable scope to get the best out of it.

Zetter
Stuff like bunnies are clear at about 70+ yards so it was beyond 12 ft/lb airgun ranges from having a play with my friends. We didnt really push it much further than this as we were after bunnies as closer ranges in a small paddock. Not sure if Brian has pushed his out any further at all. When we are out next week I will have a play and see how far we can push it on the bunnies.

activeviii
the photon is now on the shelf at scott's you do need to buy a better IR source and a doubler. out the box it is more or less the same as the pitch black in the spec. but in looks. well i'm affair i don't like the idea of a sandwich box on a rifle. Photon out the box will do you for ratting and rabbits on the air rifle, you will need to carry extra batteries as the laser IR eats them. i put a T20 torch on the top and than added a doubler so its now running around 8.5x42 rather than 5x42. I do like the Photon but if the Pitch black was more pleasing to the eye then i might have had a look. but then i like the traditional look down the scope as i don't want my face lit up with a tv screen. so i think the photon wins in my book Edited December 13, 2013 by activeviii
r1steele
I might be sounding a bit daft but can't you use the Archer? Don't really know much (anything) about NV but is it just too much NV for what you need?

Don't really know much (anything) about NV but is it just too much NV for what you need? I have thought of it but in close quarters such as a shed I'm afraid of my laser bouncing back and burning my expensive Archer's tube out. Id rather buy a cheaper unit and keep my Archer for in the field.

Turn the laser off and use a fairly weak IR led torch, that's if you can turn the laser off. I don't know why I'm offering this advise as I don't know much about NV or your unit so sorry for trying to teach your granny to suck eggs

Too easy to give stuff a knock when you're climbing through feed stalls etc. Don't blame you for not using it for that purpose. Would something like the new Starlight NV Arrow add on be any good? Some folks on another Forum are saying the Pulsar Challenger is very good for around the £250 mark.
bullet boy
Have heard that the Pulsar Challenger Gen 1 is better than the Cobra Merlin and a lot cheaper too.
pestbry
With the Challenger or cobra add on for rat work around sheds and barns etc , the lowest mag scope you can get is best i.e 1.5 mag is great. I use a challenger on my rapid with a 3-9 MTC for the rats around farms sheds etc ( still the 3 mag can be too much for close rat shooting ) As with most NVs you will need extra IR ( not to powerfull for the sheds mind ) The challenger is a real small unit as well and once set up its easy to remove and add on. not forgetting best to have a scope with side para. Althou the challenger is cheap it gives a great clear pic, i cant fault it.
