Hi guys

Cookie will be 5 months old on the 27th

no two days are the same, one day he is a saint, sitting on command, the next day I might as well be talking to myself :sad1:

( stay calm :) )

saying that I now have him sitting and waiting for the command before going on his retrieve.

however my technique needs changing, since this short video clip was recorded I have started to crouch down and point my hand in the direction of the dummy.

im also slipping in one blind retrieve per session, which have gone well so far, great to see him searching for it.

His delivery needs to be worked on because he likes to run around with the dummy and

not come directly to me.

he quarters to a fashion, get's under my feet a little but im sure with confidence that will improve.

im taking it slowly and allowing him plenty of puppy time and im sure all dogs are different but

I would be interested to know where you all were with your puppies training at 5 months?

so I can get an idea if im behind, on track or ahead of expectations?

Thanks

Paul

People that ask opinions don't usually like the opinion they receive. But here is mine. The dog looks bored to death. He doesn't look sharp and no tail action at all. At that age it should be running in to its retrieves and generally flying around. Back off the dog and let it be a pup

That's is on my opinion of course.

My experiance was that pups are very attached to you at that age and seem to pick things up real easy, i thought I got a super dog here.

Then 6 months hit, their confidence grows and off they go and all the training starts again. The you think by 12months ive got him sorted, start taking him on the lead around a bit of game or cold game training.... then they go mad and start again...then u take them shooting and thats when you really start to train.

the work you have done is not lost but you will be training all its life, let it be a pup and just get it used to you, walking at night, buses and other dogs then start on the training for shooting

At this age it is more about nuturing them in the right direction and let them be a pup and find there use of their nose etc.

That said tho i still wouldnt let him/her run wild, still keep him close dont let them get away from you.

Most people who struggle with keeping their dogs working close ask me how i dont have this problem........Easy they have never been allowed to get away from me, so they know no different.

As i have said on other threads for me its all about consistency, consistency, consistency....

Have fun

Rich

Too much too soon, its not a race and if you race a car before the pits have finished their work - the wheels might fall off! Seriously we can expect ten years out of a gundog why get there 1 season quicker and end up with less of a dog for 9yrs

I should have it playing at gundog things, without any polish (no sit stays and running in) but always belting back in on recall that's about it

There is a saying "quick to make, quick to spoil" take a step back and get the dog really into the fun side

mines nearlly 5 months, 2 springers ,concentrated so far on being good in house, good with kids, general housetraining, there now clean, dont nip, basically the start of a good house dog.

bitch - off the lead recalling well out to 40 yards, loves playing with toys with the odd few times of 1/2lb rabbit dummy, i throw, she brings i praise.... if it dont work out then of she goes and plays, great loveable pup, loves to please and would come on loads if i put the work in, not so good on lead but getting there

dog - great on lead, had a few teething problems indoors, food agression, basically a stubborn mutt.... not of the lead yet needs a couple more weeks as recall for me is not upto scratch, wont be of untill i trust him although 50ft long lead works well with his sister.

there chalk and cheese and for some not coming on nicely... * by 6 months i had mine beating etc etc *

im working with both steadily, not rushing, want things 100% before i move onto guns etc, although i knew a shoot would be on in the distance today so had them out most the afternoon,in the distance you can hear them popping them of, dog wasnt bothered, bitch was, but a few runs and recalls on the whistle as soon as i heard them start she soon forgot about them.

if by a year i have a half decent decoying/flushing dog i will be happy, if not then il work alot harder, dunno if im doing right but working so far, all the best steve
