Dunkield
Can any of the sea anglers recommend line breaking strain and make/type for the occasional bit of boat fishing? I usually hire tackle but have bought my own reel and just need to load it now. I am thinking 25lb mono, in searches the red stuff (can't remember it's name) keeps coming up. We usually catch mackrel on the way out, then bream/bass etc further out.
fenboy
Braid will serve you better from a boat , more of an initial outlay but should last ages , a 80lb braid will not be as thick as 25lb mono , so less drag and less weight needed , will show bites better and will set hooks better and you will pull out of more snags than you will with mono
Whitebridges
The red mono you could be referring to could be "red ice"? I think it's pretty **** to be honest. Think seriously about going to braid, it's great. Downside is it's pricey and if you are fishing a few rods in the boat it's very prone to tangle especially where there are mixed rods with both braid and mono being fished. Can be an absolute mare to untangle. I use 30lb braid on Avet multipliers for mainly rays, cod and bass and it works a treat. Dunkield
Thanks for the replies. Coincidentally it was Sufix Tritanium Red that I had seen in searches

Sprackles
I have started using braid on the boat due to its much thinner diameter and lack of stretch. Better bite detection and hook setting and less drag against the tide. I opted for a large fixed spool for up tiding to reduce backlash risk and use multipliers for down tide and jigging. Once you've used it you won't go back to mono.. Edited January 15, 2014 by Sprackles
oscarsdad
Braid is good but expensive as mentioned - bear in mind you need to use different knots for braid than mono so you may need to learn a new knot. If you want mono then suffix as mentioned or diawa tournament is a great line as is Berkeley big game.
hawkfanz
you havent said what the boat rod is rated at,ie class 20/30 etc that will determine what strength of line you need, ive used both braid and mono but prefer mono had my own sea fishing boats for more than 30 years fishing mainly anglesey but lancashire coast as well plus a few others,,if your rod is a 20 lb class load with 18/20 mono if its 30 use 25/30 lb and so on i used 20lb class for tope 12 lb class for light work and 30 lb for heavier bottom work. II agree red ice is ****. when I go out on my boat I use 29lb braid for mackerel/bass etc but I do use 20lb mono with a 100lb rubbing leader for good seems to work well. 20lb mono and 100lb rubbing leader for tope
