Doriboy
Thinking about getting one of those neoprene coats for my lab, are there any particularly good ones or any to avoid? Cheers
kent
Most important is fit on your dog. A proper double coated lab acclimatised to living out doors and with the natural oils still in his coat does not need one till it gets way colder than this, in fact excess heat might be more of an issue. Not all Labs have a proper lab coat and some live indoors in that case its different
figgy
Avery outdoors do a good one, the Dokken coat gets good reveiws but I went for the Jack Pyke one for my Cocker as I wanted the chest protector as he has no regard for his own well being. Doriboy
Thanks for the replies and yes he does live inside due to me not being foolish enough to disobey the misses... Chest protection may well be a good idea too as he really doesn't have much thought of self preservation either

Chest protection may well be a good idea too as he really doesn't have much thought of self preservation either I take it he will be doing water work in it? I shouldn't put them on a dog working cover. They are at their best with a wet dog waiting about in cold winter wind. Serious risk of over heating while active and dry
Doriboy
Yes for doing water work. I just want to make him as comfortable as possible while on the marsh, he looks cold when he gets a retrieve then has to sit next to me for an hour before another dunking
Penelope
Although Labs are natural water lovers and generally good swimmers, I think the extra buoyancy aids that fit some of these jackets are a good idea if they are constantly in and out of the water and contending with the tide. Kent is right about the potential for over heating though. Yes for doing water work. silver pigeon 3
I went with the rivers west coat, not neoprene but the heavy duty fleece. Only used it on a few occasions when it has been really cold as my Lab is pretty resistant to the cold. Seems ok though and does what in needs to do. Does that not soak up the water and make it more difficult for the dog to swim ?

silver pigeon 3
Does that not soak up the water and make it more difficult for the dog to swim ? Doesn't seem to, it has foam inserts in it so they would more than negate the extra weight anyway.

Doriboy
Cheers nic, interesting to hear people saying Jack Pyke as I've had a few bits of their stuff and they've certainly not been the best quality but maybe the dog coats are different
Wildfowler12
Be careful with the sizing on the JP jacket, it rubbed like crazy under my dogs armpits (leg pits?). I had it trimmed and it's perfect now. Although I only use it when it's cold.

rusticola
Are there any breathable dog coats available? Wouldn't want the dog sweating and chilling, or maybe I worry too much!

anthonychez
A friend of mine has just bought two for his spaniel. The jack pike is much better quality than the riverswest imo. She is a little dog and struggled finding a snug fit.but the jack pike is perfect. What a difference it make to the dog. it enjoys it more when its wet and cold and obviously works Better. Cant see any chesie owners jumping at your offer kent! Lol

Lol Not yours too small for it.I mean this is for a BIG dog a big bruiser of a male if anyone is interested , my GWP wore it and he was a monster! My lab dog aint a small and he would disappear into it! To be fair they are things for indoors and poor coated dogs when we talk any of the proper duck dogs (unless you live in the USA at present). So many say their spaniels shiver coz they are exited, strange they don't get exited when they are wearing a well fitted coat I don't see them shiver Edited January 7, 2014 by kent
rusticola
Dogs don't sweat Never knew that! Feel a bit stupid at not realising this... Apparently they only sweat through their paws! Neoprene all the way then!

kent
This is why dogs keel over from over heating, they only pant and we are too dumb to spot it
