oscarsdad
Another one for a Border they have a lot going for them just put a lot of effort into socialising it. Mine could be let off the lead anywhere, brilliant with people and had a brilliant nose for game I kid you not. They are not yappy but brilliant alarm dogs, you won't hear mine bark for days but if someone comes down the drive he will bark once and come and find me. My missus wanted the Border,I wasn't fussed about them but he bonded with me and followed me everywhere,so loyal The only downside is if you have any small pets he will have them if you leave them unattended, any rats, rabbits, squirrels they will kill them,it can be embarrassing in a local park I know what you mean about keeping them sweet,I'm having a Springer this year.ATB Yep...can't even say cat, rabbit, squirrel, pigeon, pheasant or grouse without mine getting wound up lol! He was exposed to rabbits at a very early age and he knows the difference between wild and domestic rabbits and never laid a paw on them (ex girlfriend's father did this, I wasn't there and would not have allowed him on the dining table!). He was also very good with my elderly cat who passed away last year at the ripe old age of 23 - I wouldn't leave him alone with her but he appeared to have no desire to hurt her. byjovecarruthers
Maybe tough is not the right word, but want a dog that doesnt mind being outside all weather, getting dirty etc. Not just a lap dog. The word you require is robust.
Steve_in_Devon
I have 1/4 TECKEL 3/4 Cocker and she's a cracking little dog. ....Never heard her bark and is soft as a brush. She is a brilliant all rounder but just a bit smaller than your average cocker! ATB Ben image.jpg She is lovely, dont see many of them around. Doing alot of searching at the moment to see what options are around. Anyone have experience with Lakeland terriers?

Anyone have experience with Lakeland terriers? I haven't owned a Lakeland but believe they are similar to borders with perhaps a less laid back temperament....Patterdales are in the similar group but all the experience I have of those is they are much more aggressive and fiery but that may just be the specific dog. Thanks, was looking at a border x lakeland, hence the question what are lakelands likes.
Steve_in_Devon
How about a beagle cross border terrior, what do you think of that mix. I add a beagle growing up and loved it, it was such a lovely dog.
oscarsdad
Why do you want a cross rather than a pure bred dog?

SC00P
I saw a schnauzer X welsh terrier at galloway country fair and what a dog that was . I have even considered putting my schnauzer bitch to a welsh terrier Have you thought about a schnauzer ? There are a few black ones out there now Edited January 14, 2014 by SC00P
rtaylor
How about a Brittany Spaniel? I'm trying to persuade the missus to have one. They are all round gun dogs, designed by the french to do anything from beating/hunting to pointing and retrieving. Similar size to a big ESS. I've known quite a few Patterdales and they are all excellent in the house, great with kids etc. But like you have been saying about the borders will happily kill small fluffy things all day long. Robust is certainly the word for them. Edited January 14, 2014 by rtaylor
gazbev
Lakeland borders are good dogs. You can bring them up from a young pup with livestock, mine was brought up with chickens, all part of a good socialisation
Steve_in_Devon
Whatever we go with would need to learn to leave the chickens alone, at the moment we have 14 hens. I like the sound of a beagle cross

To be honest even the breeder whom I know well confesses that they rarely voice unless very close on the scent. I'm not sure what makes you say aggressive all the ones I've seen are soft as ****.great dogs if you don't mind them hunting without easy recall. kent
Hund= hound= noisy, there are exceptions though. Likewise they are dogs used on wild boar (so not exactly shy of mixing it) . Just like you can get useless soft terriers that wont face up to a fox and you can get over aggressive labs that take a chunk out of the postman odd balls exist. Aled
Just had a look at the price border terrier puppies are for sale for, they match springers and labs for price. Cheers Aled Edited January 14, 2014 by Aled
hedd-wyn
There's border terrier on our shoot, she's 14 years old, tough as old boots and works better than some of the spaniels. if I had more room I would definitely get one. Very true, when they do use it they have a beautiful voice. The lines I have seen worked along with vendeens only voice when close I certainly wouldn't be put off one for being aggressive, whilst not shy hunter's I'd stop short of agreeing there. Although they do seem to be getting more expensive, I think the relative lack of them over here is leasing to cocker crosses. I'd be careful when considering crosses, you can't always be sure you'll get the desired traits of each and that's difficult to tell with a puppy, but there are some excellent exceptions

And to be honest i was looking for a pure Cocker when i came across my Sal!! It was mainly out of curiosity and by chance that i went to see her and was taken by her!
