thepasty
Saab,s not Saab since G.M. took over my sister had an 54 model plate and was plagued with problems , not the same quality anymore and deffo not reliable ! Your sister had a bad one so they're all bad? Nice thinking I've got two Saab 93 Sport wagons, both 2l diesels, 150bhp and 212bhp.... they are cracking cars. I call them my time machines because you get in one and before you know it you're at your destination totally oblivious that 5hrs had past. Its the same engine as the alfa 2l JTD....cracking engines that'll return 42+mpg running locally and 50+ on a trip.
thepasty
One of the fellas at work borrowed a Skoda Octavia VRS when his car was in for service, fantastic bit of kit. I took it for a spin and its a proper quick motor and nice inside as well. Should be able to pick one up for 10k. I've had the octavia too, mine was a legend of a car, would buy another tomorrow. Same engine is in my astra (Z19DTH) I remember when saab launched the Aero with 200Bhp to the front wheels and everyone said it was too much for FWD to cope that was without the monster torque of a diesel. The 212's been tweaked, had it like it for a while, still gives decent economy and goes like a train.
HDAV
I dont think i would trust the rest of the engine and car too hold up to 200bhp+ tempting though i think my clutch is on its way out................ The alfa standard engine went up to 170 in the blackline and i know they can be pushed much higher but must eat tyres and clutches... thepasty
the black is the same engine again as the saabs? the 2l 170? saab had the same.... the engines are the same, just a different map on the ECU. I had a good chat with the tuning guys before I had mine done, all their tuning is engine/drivetrain safe, they do higher grade tuning as well but wont apply it to the car without having components uprated to be able to handle the extra power... totally upfront, customer focused, genuine chaps. I had the DPF mapped out while I was there too, then when home and smashed out the dpf and cat matrix.... mpg and engine response went up..... and I'll never have to replace the DPF (seems to be a real ball ache with modern diesels). The clutch will only wear quicker if its slipping when fully engaged (as long as the driver is doing his part) and if its doing that the tuning has been pushed too far. Mine doesnt slip in the slightest. Alfas clutch assembly might be made from cheese tho Yeah tyres get a beating if the right foot is heavy but somethings got to give ay I'm a keen weekend motorsporter (sprints & hill climbs) so I do "test" my cars fully You know there is an Alfa 159 replacement on the way soon? aahhh the 159, the best looking saloon on the road today! Pastiebap
If thinking of the MGR route think of what sort of drive you want. I owned a Rover 75 for years and have had a few drives in the MG ZT, the MG would be a bit firmer on the suspension side. The R 75 is a fantastic motorway cruiser, it wafts along at 70 with not much noise in the cabin and not much fuss. Although personally I wouldn't go for the V8, comes from a Mustang and so has the usual american low BHP for a large engine. Although I owned the diesel my personal choice would be the 2.5 V6, the KV6 engine is fairly solid, HGF is usually only an issue with the 1.8 engine. Also aim for the Automatic, the manual gearbox is grand but the clutch (especially on the diesel) is subject to master and slave cylinder failure and this isn't cheap to repair.Other than that the R75 was the nicest car I have ever owned, when it works lol. Hesketh
Even the petrol SAAB's can be quite good on the old MPG on a run. I managed a run Edinburgh to Manchester in a 9-5 and got just over 40mpg, and that was a 2.3t with an auto box. The newer 9-5's are a lot better on the twisty bits, but will seldom win any handling award next to say a BMW. but they are cheap, well build and comfy as hell. Good god I must be getting old. ferguson_tom
Diesel? Have a mate with a Fabian vrs diesel he rates it The one he borrowed was petrol, the stats say it will do 40mpg but there is no way if i owned that car i would get anywhere near that . The diesel engine they put in is the standard 2.0 VAG unit tuned to about 180bhp and enough torque to bump start the moon so it will go well. If you can afford the DSG gearbox they are lovely with none of the drawbacks of a conventional auto box.
washerboy
Why not buy a decent kitted out vauxhall insignia, nicer to look at then the saab and the same running gear and probably cheaper.
Brooksy789
Its well within budget and may not be as powerful as you may want but what about a Mondeo ST TDCi? 155bhp but really torquey being diesel. Failing that a proper Mondeo ST220 with the 3.0 V6 but not many mpg lol. I have a soft spot for these cars and would love a V6 ST220, they have an awesome engine/exhaust note!
