You'll get on well here with that attitude mate. I would suggest you swap your springer in for a PCP if you seriously want to start knocking over a few pests. Get yourself some insurance, BASC, NGO, Countryside Alliance all offer insurance packages and quarterly magazines etc.

then I would update your profile and get a few posts under your belt, then ask nicely if someone could take you out to show you the ropes.

Apologies, thought the ultra was the lightning then. I would recommend you buy a magazine like sporting rifle. BASC insurance is more like a membership. http://basc.org.uk.

Yes 12ft/lbs is the legal limit for an air rifle. Unless you have an FAC (Firearms Certificate).

It seems you don't know much about shooting so I would recommend reading as much online, watching YouTube videos, there is a good book, the essential airgun manual ISBN: 1-903380-29-4. It's a good read and covers the basics. I have a copy, I may put it up in the for sale section.

Researching the law is also very important. Knowing what you're allowed to shoot, when, and what is legal or illegal.

I would recommend you post in the Airgunners section also rather than the permissions wanted board.

Practice practice practice. And stop calling it hunting. Pest or vermin control is a much better way of putting it. Look at the basc legal quarry list, remember you must have a good reason to shoot any pest and other methods must have been tried before shooting, I.e. Trapping, scaring, etc

Some times people jump in with both feet up to the thighs ,normally people introduce them selves and find there way around the forums before asking things like this. If you have this aggressive attitude with 8 posts how would you ever gain shooting permission

Chill out and take the softly softly approach some information and knowledge about your self might help .other wise you will end up with the Johnny Rambo's

I don't think the fact you gave us all 35 minutes between your first post and then writing us all off as a bunch of ***** helped much to be honest.

Seems like you're doing the right thing now, as you'll be up against seasoned professionals with years of experience and it's things like insurance and the way in which you approach things that will be key to being taken seriously. You can't say you're ready to do some pest control if you don't have insurance (and haven't even looked into it). Having a shiny rifle, being capable of using it and knowing what to do if something goes wrong are very different things.

Clubs are a great way to keep your skills sharp between trips into the field and you need to ensure you're on top of your game when you get one as too many trips into the field with nothing to show for it can result in the landowner swapping you out for the next person that knocks on his door.

You can save yourself some money - you don't need a book on quarry and closed seasons as rabbit, pigeon and squirrels aren't seasonal. Just have a look at the General Licences on the Natural England website and then have a hunt around the net to see where your shot placement should be on each of them to ensure a clean kill (it doesn't have to be a head shot). Also, check up on the law with regard to hunting and just make sure you're happy how this would affect you on any permissions you get. If anything isn't clear then people will usually help out on here - key is ask before you start.

Also, practice with your scope so you understand where the pellet is hitting at different distances on the different magnifications. My rule of thumb for air gun hunting is you need to be hitting a 5p piece consistently and then you're good at that distance and will be more likely to place the pellet where you mean to and help ensure a clean kill. If you find that 5p is too small and too many shots aren't going there then bring your range in 5 or 10 yards so it's consistent. If the 5p isn't being struck then don't shoot at that distance.

Enjoy your time on the boards, there's a lot that can be learnt from some people on here (and some **** to be avoided too) but try to be a bit more patient and understand that you may not get all of your questions answered straight off.

Cheers

Are these know as particularly rural areas? I know its catch 22 but experience and reputation in the field counts way more than what you think or what you say you can do on a range. Recommendation, referral and who you meet and know are the most important aspects. For every guy who lives 30miles away there are 1/2 dozen guys local who are known. Have your tried local pest control companies and the like? sometimes they need a lift, it might not be sporting but its a step on the ladder you have not yet reached
