ditchman
I have done nothing else 'cept moan about the lack of pigeons, since august...........i have been wandering about near my shooting area and i am now seeing birds drop down to slashed game covers, and in fair numbers 100-150, for several days now, looking at my shooting areas i am at last seeing birds (albeit) in 2's and 3's flighting about.......the area i shoot has several established flightlines that the birds have been using for many years, but although the birds are returning they are all using different flightlines now, so i will watch for the next few weeks to see how things develope before setting up. its funny how once the birds return the countryside comes to life again....it felt like "Desolation avenue" since august, and im very relived to see them back again.....AND ...the rooks have dissapeared....proberly starting to nest now. ................ anser2
Starting to see a few more on my ground now. One flock of 30 is my biggest to date this year so far But they are very scattered. I found small flocks on rape , several drillings and the best one on clover ( about 25 pigeons ) Up until now I had seen no feeding flocks over 10 and most were of 2-6 birds. However unless numbers pick up will give them a rest for this spring , they are badly in need of a good breeding season. Pigeon numbers have dived in recent years , five years ago flocks of 5,000 were quite common , I would expect 20-40 pigeons most days and a number of 100 plus bags each winter. There has been no change in crops ( corn, rape, beet , spuds and grass with clover) though for the past 2 years there has been a complete failure in acorns and beech mast. No shortage in woodland (oak) with a 1000 acre block and about 20 other small woods 20-100 acres of both broadleaved and pine. In short ideal wood pigeon country , but this year with almost no wood pigeons.

ditchman
ditchman moan, never. nothing like a good moan...lets you know you are still alive....ive got all my chores done now and have cut up and stacked enough wood for next winter...so i aint got that to worry about during the rest of the year......will start using my beretta 303 auto soon, after i have stripped the cracked varnish off the stock and stained the wood..( its very light in colour) and i will give it a nice functional oiled finish...as the old game gun is going to fund a scrap 200 seris defender engine which i will work on during the summer.........so for a change everything is positive....which makes a bloody change......
