evo
got a call off the farmer yesterday to say he had finished drilling the barley in and there was a few pigeons and crows turning up,,so this morning decided to go for a browse and take the guns just incase anything was about,, we set up the hide and after 2 hours and 1 bird coming in and 1 miss we decided to pack in and go to another perm with the rimfire after rabbits,, only one bird flew over us and did not even commit to the pattern so the skies where totally dead and birdless, nothing at all showing, we went to the other perm for an hour and had one bunny then after going for something to eat decided to go back to the drilled field again to see if anything had moved on it, still nothing so decided then to call it a day,,, how long do the pigeon watch masses usually leave it before shooting as sometimes they appear straight away but the birds must be more interested in making baby birds, has anyone else suffered this at all cheers Evo
aga man
keep an eye on it evo, it can take upto a week for the birds to find it and the seed will germinate within 2 weeks so the window to make a bag can be small. having said that the field could be covered in pigeons tommorow especially in the afternoons as others have noticed. In certain areas the pigeons are certainly feeding on tree buds and clover and as you say busy doing other things. If the crows have made an apearance already they are bound to build up there. good luck.

la bala
Bob, i watched a piece of drill littered with beans for 2 days, nothing, i decided to leave 2 days, i went back the next day, not a bean in sight. You know the old saying mate, Right place right time. Last week on another field the pigeon were virtually following the drill, its a frustrating old game mate, stick with it. -Mongrel-
Tough at the moment. We definitely have pigeons hitting rape, but maybe only 100. Walk them off, set up, a pair come in, one doesn't leave, the other 99 do, not to be seen again for the rest of that day. ...return and repeat. Don't forget, pigeons can't scratch so if it's not on top, there's nothing for them.
evo
If there any seed on the surface? Don't forget, pigeons can't scratch so if it's not on top, there's nothing for them. yes there is seed on the top ,, as we where there the second tome the farmer was rolling it in but when we inspected the ground there was still plenty of seed about so he must be using an old machine to drill it in, will keep my eye on it this week to see how things unfold hopefully it will pick up, need to take one of my buddies up to give him a day out as he,s not had much through the winter and fair cop to him he has stuck it out, its the only field about that has been drilled so when they find it we should get a few atb Evo
fortune
The other day I saw a small piece of field right alongside of the road.around a small lane that was shoulder to shoulder full of pigeon. I am talking several hundred on a piece of land about two hundred yards long and about fifty yards wide. It is not on a piece of ground that I have access to and I have no idea what was planted there but I don't think that I have ever seen pigeons so close feeding together. I couldn't stop to find out as I was late and had a car right up tight to my rear. When I was going back I went that way and they had all gone. I pulled over to watch for a while and although it was quiet, being down a lane nothing showed for the half hour that I waited. If someone had told me that the pigeons were there in the kind of numbers that I saw, then I would have to inform them that they were mistaken. I don't think that the field would have been very easy if not impossible to shoot as there are no hedges or trees with a road on one side and a deep dyke around the other side. Just a flat small field

fortune
You don't need trees or hedges on a field to be able to shoot it. Agreed, In the past I've had good shooting on fields that were just dirt and decoyed them into what they thought was something good. But this small piece of ground didn't even have a telephone pole on it and being right next to a road and no more than 50 yards wide would no doubt had the do gooders passing by, on the phone to plod or even stopping to take up the cudgel with you. Now I know that if you have the rights to shoot then it doesn't matter what they do or say it shouldn't effect you but unless the birds will come back after being disturbed then it is a bit of a waste of time. like I stated I looked back to the ground on my way back and there was nothing around at all.
