kent
Exposure to something new or reacting to something old that didn't used to bother it (it happens) process of illumination if the vet cant say
wj939
Mine picked fleas up in the vets previously. Get her bedding washed in something hypo allergenic. You can try rubbing e 45 or aqueous cream into her belly to sooth her. On the piriton front that tablet is chlorphenamine. Try her on ceterizine (zirtek) not all people benefit from one type of allergy tablets, try the other see how it goes.

Paul T
Sounds like some sort of allergy, so if you can discount mite, fleas etc start looking elsewhere. What cleaning products do you use around the areas she lays? Do you use plug in air fresheners? Shake n vac products? All these can cause allergic reactions. Also, it could also be food related - what are you feeding her? Google 'Dog cereal allergy symptoms'. To me, the paw chewing (if persistent) is a classic symptom. Find and cure the source of the problem, don't just try and cure the symptoms with tablets
Radar_uk
One of my GWP's suffers something similar, will scratch and nibble himself practically raw. He's absolutely fine during the winter and when it's raining or the ground is wet from recent rain but as soon as it's dry and sunny it flares up. Previous owners returned him to the breeder as they couldn't cope with it and their vet determined he had hay mite allergy and treated him accordingly which apparently made little difference. Got it under control now with a regime of piriton twice daily, when he's back from his walks he gets a quick wash down, bedding cleaned frequently as well as back of car etc. If it does start to flare up I give him some pure virgin coconut oil in his food and rub that into the problem areas which alleviates the irritation and you end up with a dog smelling like a Thai curry lol ! Evil Elvis
I had an issue with one of my vizsla, if she eats anything with wheat in it she's flares up badly ears swell skin itches and goes dry so we took her off kibble and she now has the Barf diet, all raw meat veg and brown rice And looks great on it. I would put money on half of these issues being caused by the Same. It's quite wierd feeding them chicken bones to start with but they love It now, all 7 of mine have gone over to it now and look amazing
darren m
I,ve put her on hypoallergenic salmon and rice for just over a week , made by beta as it was on offer so I thought I,d give it a try to be honest for the first 4 days I could of sworn she had improved a bit , but then next day she was scratching like mad again if it was fleas or mites my other 2 spaniels would be suffering too. I might go down the raw food for a week or 2 and see if she improves , although not sure how much to feed and what combination. thanks ps is piriton or generic the only anti histamine suitable for dogs
Bazooka
Sounds like dickies to me.Forget about the other dogs.Treat the scratcher with some flea, mite, tick treatment. If it was me with the scratchy dog ad be going to the vets for some dickie treatment,Frontline or the like, knowing full well it's a bit more expensive to get from the vet but at the same time ad be dragging one of them out for a sneaky freebie once over, just to make sure. Two birds one stone. Also would forget bout the other dogs not having it.Some are more susceptable to certain infestations. One of mine picks ticks easily. The others rarely get bothered. If you go down he allergy route go for Piriton.Few quid more expensive but at least you know what it says it does, it actually does.Am a hay fever sufferer and some of the anti histimines dont even come close to helping symtoms. WGD
It might have started with an allergy but chances are now there is a bit of secondary infection causing the itch. Finding what caused the allergic reaction at this stage will not necessarily stop the dog itching.
