team tractor
What makes a stock a certain grade??? Tonight I've seen a grade 5 walnut stock advertised on Facebook but why is a grade 5? Why not a 3 or
double10
I'd imagine the aesthetic quality?

Gee.
Its the woods aesthetic quality as mentioned by double 10. However, it varies between manufacturers. A grade 3 for example with manufacturer 'A' will be different to manufacturer 'B's grade 3. Usually the higher the grade the better the grain and sometimes density of the wood. As you can see from 955i's posted link, some manufactures grade from high to low as being the better wood, where more commonly its from low to high = better. At the end of the day its up to you to decide if paying out the extra cash (sometimes mega amounts!) is worth it, as its not going to make the gun shoot any better, Edited April 20, 2014 by Gee. Gordon R
I have owned a fair number of guns, from different manufacturers and have real difficulty with their opinions. These ranged from grade 1, to grades 2,3 and 5. The best wood was on a grade 3, with one grade 5 looking more like a 1. You just have to make up your own mind - exactly as Willpoon says. Gunman
A matter of the opinion of the seller . Is grade 1 the best or is that grade 5 ? A matter of opinion of the seller . By the by as I have been dealing in stock blanks for many years I would never buy off a picture unless 1 you really know what you are looking at and how to pick an appropriate blank for the gun it is to go on . 2 you know and trust the seller 3 the wood is guaranteed I have bought blanks [for more money than I should have] that were going to be spectacular or total scrap but that's years of experience as well as gamble . I was looking at blanks on web sites last week and there were some very pretty wood, if you want a coffee table but no way would I stock a gun with a lot of them .
