JDog
Home at 3:30, dogs out, kit in the car and off to a barley drilling nearby on which I have seen a few feeding. There was one line into the nearest field and a better line three fields away over a field on which I do not have the shooting. I chose to draw the birds from the latter field and I brought out of retirement the rotary in an attempt to get birds off the line and into the decoys. I was set up by 4:15 and by 4:16 three birds were in the bag. There is no doubt that the rotary managed to get birds off the flight line, though not every bird using it. When they came off the line towards the decoys they decoyed beautifully and for once I shot reasonably well. Just when I was preening myself and allowing a modicum of self congratulations who should turn up but young William who I have mentioned before on the forum. It was his father's land I was shooting and hot foot from the school bus he turned up with a seat but with no gun! How polite was that? I handed him my gun and within seconds he had shot a bird without even mounting the gun properly and he proceeded to shoot very well indeed. He has a real eye for shooting and I gather that he has some serious sponsors in the clay shooting world. Domestic duties dictated that I had to leave at 6:00 and as we got back to the car the real flight was only just starting. There were more birds in the air than I had seen all afternoon. C'est la vie. I picked 35 pigeons on what was a very nice afternoon.
