d foxxer
hi can somebody tell me which choke for pigeon that are a little further out from where I hide up under a flight line thanks in advance
Catweazle
This varies a lot from gun to gun and cartridge to cartridge, but generally i have found that there is little to be gained over half choke.
fenboy
I favour 3/4 choke for the longer birds but have shot full on occasion.
Berettacocker
If you shoot well, you could use full choke and shoot everything with it. But as said you will kill birds very well with half choke
d foxxer
cheers lads I am using escort semi choke has 3 notches and using clear pigeon 6 shot flightline is over my back garden in a field with a line o trees they come down the line of trees straight toward me and out towards the right evening time for about an hour or just over they are obviously on the way home to roost I hit one now and again but usually miss al of em like this evening 14 shells for zero its appalling but good fun I don't get upset but would like a couple to scoff maybe I ought change cartridge as well my mate laughs at me says he will rig up hiss clay trap to launch dustbin lids and I might hit one im sure I will get it right if I keep plugging away its one hell of a hoot tho I even laugh at myself
fenboy
Are you sure the birds in range ? the difference between 1/2 and full will not be noticeable if the birds are not in range anyway . On the flip side if you cannot hit birds that are in range with 1/2 you will only find it more difficult with full.

I guess so they are treetop height above me and some are anything from 25 to 50 yds out to the right of me
motty
Sounds like a trip or two to the clay ground could be in order.
d foxxer
done that buddy managed 18 out of 50 birds nothing wrong with gun it fits perfect its me i think as theres not much time before the pigeon are on top of me after they come over the tree line not far off snap shooting they go like the clappers compared to clays also my mate says it could be partly because i am a rifle shooter and shotgunning is fairly new to me

Shooting 18/50 doesn't sound like consistent shooting. You may well be best off going back to the clays until you improve.

yickdaz
consistent shooting is 44/50 and 92/100 on the clays sporting wise, and around 23/25 on skeet and that's still down on what the top shots will average
HDAV
What choke and shell combo are you using? sounds like you need some time on the driven stand at the clays......

simjakcal
Can u tell if ur shooting infront or behind...usually find ur not getting infront of the birds enuff....you be suprised how much you got to give long birds...
HDAV
Don't shoot at them you will miss, a lesson will work out cheaper than the wasted shells
Whitetail
I think your trying to run before you can walk, as other posts have said get proficient at clays or decoyed birds , your not being fair on the birds or yourself at the moment. A good shot on flighting pigeons taking birds that are in range would do well to kill half they shoot at. Half choke with clear pigeon cartridges are a lethal combination, that's not the problem
