harpoonlouis
After having shot shotguns for over 40 years I want to try stalking. You guys are already doing it so I tought I waould ask a very basic level question, how to you advise me to start? There seem to be a lot of outfits doing DSC and pre-DSC courses, what are your experiences, opinions of any of them? An advice welcome. toontastic
Before spending Big money on courses maybe try an outing with someone offering paid stalking. It not only gives you a chance to see if stalking is for you it also gives you a chance to ask loads of questions. What is your location it may help people in giving you advice. harpoonlouis
Thanks clakk very helpful post. I have seen some good comments about elk hunter who right on my door step. Has anyone shot with Des, BASC emplyee (?) at Thetford? I think this may be on cull days, heard about him at a BASC evening put on at Lakeside Sporting a couple of years ago. toontastic
Elk Hunter used to do a course where you go on the range, learn about shot placement, cull a deer, learn how to gralloch it then go indoors and learn how to butcher the animal. Dunkield
I would just go out with someone initially, don't even think about training and all that just yet. You might find dragging a deer out in 90% humidity at 10 o'clock and night and then dealing with it as quickly as possible, just so you can get home and grab a couple of hours kip before getting back out there again isn't actually your cup of tea
Dunkield
I forgot to add, whilst dealing with the deer (in the dark with ahead torch on) dripping in sweat, batting away horse flies, midges and mozi's, trying not to stab yourself in the face with a razor sharp knife covered in blood, guts and hair. But don't let me put you off The good times far out way the bad.

andrew f
the courses are only useful if your going to buy stalking from the forestry commission ect I was taught by my dad from a young age. My advise would get friendly with a local deer stalker and ask him to be your mentor when you apply for your firearms licence he should take you out and teach you the craft. if your close to me ill take you out for free. Redgum
good advice above but be prepared to be patient as finding your own bit of stalking can be like chipping into granite with a plastic fork.
