ben0850 Posted July 30, 2014 Report Share Posted July 30, 2014 Morning PW Right.......I have decided to purchase a second motor which will fit the following criteria; - 4 x 4, comfortable, able to fit kids seats in the back if required, big enough boot for black lab plus tackle - Capable of towing an Ifor Williams full of lambs if required - Reliable (well as reliable as any 4x4 can be) - The motor will probably be doing less than 5k miles a year. I have a daily use car for commuting and the Mrs has a defender 90 with all the boots etc for the farm BUT I am after a second car for her to use around the dale, me to use with the dog occasionally as the Defender isnt upto doing much more than local miles and doesn't have any rear seats etc... i have read through most of the previous threads on here and various reports on the internet and have narrowed down my list to three; - Nissan Terrano 2.7d - Grand Vitara XL - Wild card choice of a Jeep Cherokee Im my heart of hearts i think the Terrano fits the bill and appears to be pretty robust however finding one is proving to be a bit difficult, most of the vehicles for sale tend to be by less than scrupulous dealers (for example 2 previous owners, when ive checked there have been 6) etc.. Its obviously just personal choice but a 4X4 doesnt have to look like one, and can be much more versatile as a result. I am becoming an advocate for Hyundai as I have found them ultra reliable and economical. In this case I would look at a Tucson or the bigger Santa Fe - the design has improved since then but the mechanicals were very good in these. I took my Tucson up farm tracks over tractor ruts and for miles on road . Just test- drive one as an alternative - a bit cheaper too. A Ifor Wms trailer full of lambs, on a farm track or field, won't be much use behind a Santa Fe. The Terranos are all getting a bit old now, for the towing capacity you'd really want the 5 door version (I've got a 3 door, but I think the 5 door have higher towing weight). The 2.7d is a good engine, they've got masses of torque, so definitely up to the job. The 3 door version also doesn't have a large boot (no idea about the 5 door type) How about a Shogun 3.2 diesel, 5 door ? dodeer Posted July 30, 2014 Report Share Posted July 30, 2014 2.7 CRD Grand Cherokee tows 3500kg. Quite a meaty engine. Can pick a nice one up for 3.5k on an 04/54 plate. If miles are that low possibly a Merc ML 350 petrol @ 20 mpg. Had a few Terranos, quite agricultural, go off road well and tow well but front wings rust easy and bodywork is quite flimsy. While the mileage for the petrol model isn't good, the 3.7 has lots of power and fun factor, is very reliable, and the price for the jeep was much cheaper than the alternatives of the same spec. Well as of yesterday I now own a Nissan Terrano, a tidy one came up being sold by a dealer who I have heard good things about so I took the plunge.
