blasterjudd
Hi Any tips on fitting a gun butt pad appreciated What's best one to buy? Where from? How much? What tools are required to fit one? Or is it best to leave it for a gunsmiths expertise? Know anyone near Essex that can do them? How long does it take to fit one ? How much should I pay? Cheers guys
deny essex
I use a leather butt pad extension on my over and under , and can utilise some of the multi pack butt spacers on the well know auction site by packing them in the leather butt pad to suit. I find that with summer and winter clothing adding or removing any extension pads under the leather pad counter acts light and heavy clothing thickness. Not the nicest looking solution but does the job. Edited August 6, 2014 by deny essex

johnphilip
i just got a ISIS adjustable pad for the wifes gun, not cheap but it works a treat. it has corrected her shooting to the left a little . they are not bad to rub down the stuff they are made of is quite forgiving
demonwolf444
Those silvers pads IMO will not look good if your trying to add over an inch. Silvers pads are heavy and the material is quite solid compared to other materials. If you have a old sbs and want to keep it looking right and not interfere with the value a slip on leather is the best, its completely removable, will not detract to the original look of the gun. Your going to be pushing it to get a pad that will add over an inch, the longest i know of from memory is 28 mm but its not something i look for generally so there may be others out there. Chances are you would need a quarter of half inch of wood extension then add the pad. Anyone can slap a pad on but it takes a bit of persistance when grinding them down. Pads are supplied over sized, the fitting procedure is to flat bed sand the base of the stock and check it with a known straight edge, then make sure the pad is flat too ( sometimes there is a slight raised area around the drilled holes from the factory ) Mark a center ling on the stock and drill the holes for the screws ( generally reccomend screwing it if its a gun of any value as you can use super glue or epoxy just fine but you have to cut them off ) Score around the stock to leave a line on the pad that you can grind up to, and be sure to not grind off any angle off the toe because it always makes it look like a bad job. Tools required as a minimum would be a straight edge and some sand paper, a belt sander can be helpful and you might want to make a jig for grinding the pad. To pay a gun smith to do it where you have a wood and pad it might be somewhere in the region of £90 plus the pad. Or just in wood just £90, give or take because prices vary all over, but it takes longer to do well than you would think, but at the same time it is not rocket science! Cranfield
I have "recoil pad" extensions fitted on all my guns, as I need an LOP of 15". The butt on every gun has had to be cut level or shaped for the pad fitting and the pads have all had to be trimmed to fit. It is a job that needs a steady hand and eye and a good belt sander and buffer. I have a side by side being fitted at the moment and it will cost me £45.00, with me supplying the "recoil pad". That to me is a bargain, set against the risk of messing up the stock.
