Rim Fire
Why do people shoot Roe and Munty with such a cannon a 243 is plenty ample for this small Deer I got Fallow on mine and my fao insisted I shoot a 243 where a 308 would be a better round for them when I ask for a 308 he said my ground I got my fac on is only rated foe 243 what a load of **** my 243 wont go through a back stop but a 308 will when will they get someone in office that knows what they are talking about my rant over
Fisheruk
Well at least it wouldn't have known much about it. A well placed .223 is plenty for Roe as well as munty. IMO.

He like the feel of my 308 more than my 243 and this bull **** about a 308 going though a back stop is just dumb never had a problem got my variant back in a week for it
andrew f
meat looks a bit of a mess, best bit looks ruined. anything more in the story ? Friend of mine said he had a client who wanted to shoot his first roebuck and was looking for a good one told him I had 5 or six worthy of a medal met the client took him out to shoot the rifles and he shot well and liked the 308 more than my 243(poor old girl doesn't get much action anymore)went back for a cup of tea and went stalking walked though two fields and this buck was just coming out from the wood waited 10 minute's for him to settle and started to stalk up on him. So we got within 180 yards rifle on the sticks told him to take his time bang and he dropped on the spot. I got the fun bit of field dressing the deer found the slug up in his throat. that's how the story ends Edited August 12, 2014 by andrew f
Harnser
That amount of meat damage will often happen when the deer is shot through the shoulder . Lots of bone for the bullet to expand on and change direction causing massive wound channels . Its a sure bet it didn't suffer . Only once had that sort of damage on a deer when I shot a red stag at the base of the neck with a .270 . The bullet changed direction and exited through the left shoulder ,needless to say it dropped on the spot . Harnser

The Essex Hunter
Not getting in to a what calibre side debate....but watching people shooting small deer with the .308 .270 and 7mm is far to large... But if that is the only size they have, then far enough. only using a .243 as I don't want a second gun sitting in the cabernet owing me a lump of money to be used once in a blue moon.... The Muntjac ( cull) I have been trimming up for a farmer have been all shot in the front end from neck, head, high lung, shoulder. Some of the damage has been quite eye opening to say the least, but with the lung shot and head shot, there was not a bit of meat wasted. TEH i agree if you only got a 308 then thats what you will use what i am getting at is the law they dont know what they are talking about they wont give me a decent round like a 308 when i shoot a fallow with my 243 you can garante they will run and if they are on the edge of the forest i got to go looking for them where a 308 has more chance of stopping them on the spot

First gun was a .270 that I used for many years ,fabulous ,fabulous cartridge that will drop anything dead . The past 20 years I have used the very venerable .308 . Fabulous ,fabulous cartridge that will drop anything dead . The best thing about these two cartridges is that you don't have to wonder if you have enough gun for the big red stags and the big fallow bucks that we have a lot of in Norfolk . TEH paid for its self before I had my license so it costs me nothing. Been trying to get fallow stalking but its like trying to get blood from a stone. so who can guess the make of rifle for a cookie ? Oh by the way I didn't shoot it I like neck shots with the 308 and lungs I want to eat the deer not walk around picking up body parts Edited August 13, 2014 by andrew f

Dunkield
Well at least it wouldn't have known much about it. A well placed .223 is plenty for Roe as well as munty. IMO. Although it will do the job, a .223 isn't much use for roe in England. It's the perfect round for muntjac though, I only use the 6.5 if I am looking for roe and find only find muntjac, if I am out specifically stalking muntjac I take the .223 every time.
