There are Gunsmiths ,as in gun dealers. Gunsmiths as in an ex schoolteachers /builders/ salesman etc. who thinks he knows a bit and there gunsmiths who have served an apprenticeship as a gunmaker and been doing it all their working lives . Problem is the average guy dose not always know which is which. Same as many other trades the gun trade has its fair share of cowboys , bodgers and part timers who can give the rest a bad name .

Do you have a trade association?

Amazing thing is they are still in business!

I think that's only because gun shops are a small market compared to your main high street stores and new people to shooting have very little choice so are easy game!. All the seasoned shooters I know avoid it like the plague. There is an excellent supplier run from a farm in Easthorp a few miles away and a good shop in chelmsford.

They don't seem specific to gunsmiths - but I suppose that would do if they had a gunsmith category of member which required some sort of qualification or length of apprenticeship to be a member. How else do you know if the person is qualified? Considering the safety consequences, I'm surprised this is not a legal requirement like working with gas.

The place at easthorp is excellent, huge selection there. No everheads so good prices. Do you ever go to the Fennes at Braintree merseapaul?

Yes but they are a waste of time , Not all people in the gun trade are members .Just about any one can join if they pay their fees . Personally I would like to see a strong trade association that vet applicants strongly and keeps the part timers and DIY men out .

You definitely need this. A professional trade association or guild - with balls and authority.

I'd like to know if it is a service or a "jet wash". As a gunmaker for 29 years I could not do a full proper strip down service for 50 quid.

I have premises and overheads... Needless to say, I have to make what is my only living.. not a hobby of mine. I can take the stock off and blow it out with Napier and an airline for fifty quid. Anyone can.

As Dougall said, Find a good one... a proper one, and support them.

Any chance of your shop or details to see if you are not too far?
