Gunman
There are Gunsmiths ,as in gun dealers. Gunsmiths as in an ex schoolteachers /builders/ salesman etc. who thinks he knows a bit and there gunsmiths who have served an apprenticeship as a gunmaker and been doing it all their working lives . Problem is the average guy dose not always know which is which. Same as many other trades the gun trade has its fair share of cowboys , bodgers and part timers who can give the rest a bad name . merseapaul
Amazing thing is they are still in business! I think that's only because gun shops are a small market compared to your main high street stores and new people to shooting have very little choice so are easy game!. All the seasoned shooters I know avoid it like the plague. There is an excellent supplier run from a farm in Easthorp a few miles away and a good shop in chelmsford. aris
The GTA? http://gtaltd.co.uk/ They don't seem specific to gunsmiths - but I suppose that would do if they had a gunsmith category of member which required some sort of qualification or length of apprenticeship to be a member. How else do you know if the person is qualified? Considering the safety consequences, I'm surprised this is not a legal requirement like working with gas. Gunman
Do you have a trade association? Yes but they are a waste of time , Not all people in the gun trade are members .Just about any one can join if they pay their fees . Personally I would like to see a strong trade association that vet applicants strongly and keeps the part timers and DIY men out . Fil
I'd like to know if it is a service or a "jet wash". As a gunmaker for 29 years I could not do a full proper strip down service for 50 quid. I have premises and overheads... Needless to say, I have to make what is my only living.. not a hobby of mine. I can take the stock off and blow it out with Napier and an airline for fifty quid. Anyone can. As Dougall said, Find a good one... a proper one, and support them.
