Ey up pigeonwatchers,

Dead eyed duck and i were out this morning on a newly combined wheat field. A few birds were showing yesterday and we both only had a couple of hours this morning. With our running harvest time pigeon total in the 250+ confidence was high........ oh how the mighty fall!!

As we approach the farm we find out our usual access gate has had a new padlock fitted, prospect now of hoofing all the gear 1/2 mile to the field. Aged companions back is creaking at the thought. We check the main auto gate in the yard on the off chance its open and HOORAY it is so we swoop in and will worry about getting out later.

So as we approach the field we have have recc'd there are pigeons, crows and magpies already munching away...... early starts are forbidden as the farmer objects to 12 bores banging away too early. we quickly set up and get the hide up and we are ready in no time.

time for a cup of tea!............... 1st major indignity of the day. Such is aged companions miserly approach to finance that not only is he reusing tea bags TWICE he refused to put sugar in the tea!!!!!!!!!!!i mean for heavens sake what kind of englishman doesn't put sugar in the tea!!!! no wonder we lost the chuffin' empire. so with that swill flung over the net and my tea poured we settled for what we were sure was going to be an entertaining couple of hours.

Aged miserly companion is shooting £££££££££££££££ AYA and first chance of the day goes to him. A feral pigeon swoops into the decoy pattern to be firmly squished at 20yds by said 20 bore.............as the explosion of feathers drift on the wind and victim falls to earth aged companion gives evil chuckle. He does dislike ferals.

My turn next,a very difficult swooping woodpigeon sails past at 40yds and my new Beretta A400 extreme fairly knocks it down.......... only for aged companions malcontent mutt to attempt to run in. In the process bouncing off the inside of the hide netting sending the tea flying, howling and carousing and running in circles in its attempt to run in AGAIN. As order is restored in the hide i unload the gun and fetch the bird myself such is the dogs disgrace.

Aged companions turn next and another feral is added to the bag with more swearing at insane hound that is determined to run in.

A woodpigeon for my turn easy peasy 25yds............... swooping into the decoys...................got him bang to rights............... beretta goes click.............. yep i had forgotten to reload after initial canine howling episode.

Cue a contractor turning up into the field to do some drain work, move the hide and decoys we says for last hour.

with this completed another couple of ferals are added to the bag with repeated attempts at running in by crackpot hound. Aged miserly companion even tries to nick my flask cups as the only decent tea runs dry.

Cue another contractor turning up to trim the hegdes, we gave up now. contractors everywhere................ no decent tea left................. dog is going bonkers and is totally uncontrollable, aged companion is ready to have a nervous breakdown.....................did i say there was no decent tea left?????????????

end total was 6 feral and 2 woodpigeons.

hope i can remember how to load pics of said canine lunatic, hope you all have better luck than us............... off to sit in a darkened room HA HA

The lying, cheating, porky pie telling tale teller!

Gonna did not mention that a couple of weeks previously I had outshot him using a 12g muzzle loader against his Beretta semi did he? It fires 38g of shot very nicely. (I didn't take the 6g this time, as 60g of number 6 shot can be a little overkill.....)

And he also didn't mention that a couple of days previous the same thing happened with me using my AYA sbs and standard cartridges.

He was so dis-chuffed he had come to the conclusion that it was his gun that was at fault, and the only remedy was to buy a new Beretta Extrema that was certain (he said) to improve his cartridge/kill ratio. No wonder Tim MacAvoy Guns have him high on their Xmas card list.

Trainee gundog behaved, well, a little worse than usual - but at 16 months she is very willing, and in her own time, biddable. I took her to some gundog training classes some months ago, and there was one springer there that refused to chase a tennis ball (the trainer advised the dog owner to get rid as there was no hope). There was also a Chessie Bay Retriever whose owner embarrassingly admitted that it would only retrieve a ball if it squeaked....

Gonna and I were feeling a trifle frayed after a late evening lamping the night before, but morale is certain to be high when we go out again in a couple of days time.
