Dogs worrying sheep

Recommended Posts

I am honestly shocked by some of the "advice" given on this matter, while I understand the frustration farmers must feel in this situation, some of the posts are suggesting clearly illegal methods of dealing with it on an open forum, we don't need to give antis any help with destroying our sport.

I have been in this situation I have shoot two dogs chasing sheep I let the first one off and gave it back to the owner 3 weeks later I saw sheep running around with there guts hanging out same dog once they start chasing and killing sheep they wont stop (I worked for the farmer and was told to shoot dogs that chase and injury sheep and I did so)

As far as my fac states I can buy ammunition to paragraph 6 condition d for >

The shooting of animals for the protection of other animals or humans.

You are protecting a animal from death by another.

Get em shot,

It does not matter if it's a dog or not you are legally obliged to.

Wrong.

Firstly, you are not legally obliged to do so.

Secondly, the condition you are referring to is the standard condition for expanding ammo and what it may be used for provided your firearm is so conditioned. Your firearm itself must specifically conditioned.

So it is wrong to protect the thing that pays my wage  While some idiotic tool cant keep a dog under control or on a lead with livestock running around? The police were informed and they come out and asked why I shot it I told them I had seen him ripping into them so I showed them the sheep with there guts hanging out while there still alive the vet was putting them down while the police where there.

Shooting a dog should not be talen lightly and u MUST be very certain of the law before u do it and fully comply with it.

I imagine most who have posted on here shoot foxes for farmers yet how many foxes actually kill fully grown adult sheep?? To be brutally honest how many foxes actually kill healthy lambs and they don't seem to stress the sheep over much when walking throu a field.

Now this dog has already killed adult sheep, how much stress will have been caused by this dog/s chasing the sheep round the field before it caught any? Depending where u are sheep will be tupping (or finished) the now, so the extra stress could easy affect unborn lambs/feotues's for next spring's lambing. So mibee be far more damage to come?

Like i and others have said u are only doing wot u are legally allowed to do to protect ur farmers livlihood. But only do it if ur a confident it is legal and confident in ur ability, if possibly try to use a shotgun as save the whole FAC debate.

But also warn the farmer there may be repercussions (more likely for him than u) know of 1 farmer with a rep for shooting dogs his farm road does tend to produce more punctures than most farm roads :whistling: Althou i think he likes upsetting the village, he's that kind of fella

Know another 1 who shot a lurcher many years ago (not legally as not stock chasing) the owner was a gaint of a man and carried it up to the farm and severly threatened the farmer and his buildings, he said it was months and months before he finally settled and was not up throu the nite checking his barns/sheds/tractors

Not an easy position to be in but as long as u know the law and wot u are allowed to do in wot circumstances, it's then up to u to make ur personal decision. Some will shoot, some won't. no biggy either way, althou if the dog is going to get shot by the farmers son perhaps a better marksman would help?

1. Using a gun not conditioned for the purpose.

2. Legally you MUST inform the police within 24 hours.

They are the two that leap out to me.

[As an side if someone shot my dog I would throw as much **** back at them as I possibly could. Get a decent lawyer on the case - can you prove it was my dog? Do you have your rifle conditioned for that etc?

1. I think a fair few have pointed out the need to speak to the FEO, not to give you permission to shoot a dog but rather ensure if your legal to do so re fac conditions.

2. Once again yes abide by the law at all times, inform the police yes as that is your duty ........ But and its s big but, do not mention it to a soul, employ a shovel, a load mouth will most likely gain himself or the farmer unwanted attention hence SSS

The one we shot had killed a Ewe and 2 lambs. They were freshly killed and teh dog was running round the field looking for its next victim
