CaptainBeaky
A request to the PW hive mind: Anyone know anything about powered log splitters? I had occasion to use one today, and have to say I'm a convert! Any makes to look for or avoid, what to look for when choosing one? Thanks
Dirty Harry
I've got a home made one and split at least 10 tonnes last year. I'm lucky that I can borrow it from a family member. Have you thought about saving up your wood and hiring one for a few days. The good ones are very expensive and it could save you a fortune. figgy
Unless your doing an awful lot best to hire one. If buying a one that splits on both strokes saves time, it's what I looked at buying but I like using a x27 too much. Figgy
mick miller
These are brilliant, but contact the seller and buy one with a stand.

turbo33
I picked up a second hand 4t one. Absolutely brilliant piece of kit. Ok, it doesn't move at the speed of light, but cracks even the gnarliest bit of dried oak with ease. You can pop a huge disc timber in there 18" round and chop through it in stages. Saves all the back ache and being left with those bits that you can't split. Pretty much the same as this, but red http://www.cheapmowers.com/acatalog/Handy_THLS-C_Log_Splitter_Electric.html?gclid=Cj0KEQjwt7KiBRD9lOePpe_BhrgBEiQAHaS_12Tzw0FAr2pJMouKBSpzO5K5K-Q6CUGMPdH6llX3Cv8aAqSg8P8HAQ You can get a drop on accessory that will split to 4 ways in one hit. http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0603880P/yardworks-4-way-wedge-for-yardworks-4-ton-log-splitter-60-3823-reviews/reviews.htm Edited October 26, 2014 by turbo33

CaptainBeaky
What's your budget buddy? At this stage, I'm not sure - still trying to work out at what level of budget it becomes cheaper to hire one periodically. I like the look of the Titan Mignon, and it gets favourable mentions everywhere I have seen it, especially on the pro tree-folk forums like arbtalk. It is, however, lots of money. I'm not sure whether to go for something expensive and robust, or go cheap and cheerful and risk breaking it
mick miller
I've used mine for three years and get through enough wood to keep two log burners going all winter. Not sure you need to spend several hundred on a domestic splitter. Of course, if you're splitting to sell you'll need something which can handle more volume. Dougy
Machine Mart sell some at a fair price and are suitable for home use. Have used one for probably 15 years +.
