12boreblue
Took the kids for an afternoon stroll in a local wood open to the public. I have never seen so many pigeon feeding on the beech mast. It was spectacular to see them all lift off when disturbed and flight through the tree tops and late afternoon sun. If only they did that on my permision!
fielddweller
While out on our shoot today the beaters worked an 8 acre wood mainly beech and ther must have been 1000-1500 pigeons lift.we are not rammed with acorns this year but plenty of mast about, haven't seen a single pigeon on rape yet. Continental Shooter
Same into my permission, any patch of beech is plagued with pigeons!! Farm called this week (preventive action before they move onto rape) but I won't be able to shoot them for another week due to work .... Dr D
Same here. Unbelievable beech mast. Hardly a bird to be seen. They are safe in the woods and not moving between them, so impossible to intercept. Terrible situation. I am playing the waiting game
Longstrider
I thought as much. I have permissions where I have stubble (left now to over-winter). winter wheat in, rape in and growing, barley, and a few fields worth of cattle grazing .... and hardly a ruddy bird to be seen on any of it. I'm just back from a day on the stubble which accounted for a massive bag of 2 whole pigeons (and a cocky magpie that simply asked for it ). Crop on one of them was full of grain and clover, the other was stuffed to busting with haws. My reckoning was that the most of them were tucked away in the woods feeding on haws, mast and acorns. Seems I might have been right. Oh to have a bit of woodland to sit in with the gun !
12boreblue
Going onto the rape tomorrow am, farmer says the pigeon are on it. Just hope he is right! There is a little wood in one of the fields, might hedge my bets and set up under the beech trees, hope there are beech in there!
kitchrat
Very few beech trees in my area, does that mean they will go onto rape sooner, or just fly off to the beech woods (or Norfolk) and desert me like they did last year?? 12boreblue
Went to shoot over the rape, a few ferals got up, but did not return, one bird shot at edge of woods, no birds moving. Today went to another farm with woods and rape fields, hardly a bird insight, a couple over at high altitude. we need a real cold spell I think, there is just too many berries and beech for them. Think I'll just go roost shooting until I see some on the fields.
