margun
The gold oval in my Silver Pigeon 3 is looking like its delaminated- only a bit at the edge so most of the 'top layer' is gone if you know what I mean. Would like to replace it and get my initials put in- anyone know (a) what I should be paying and (b)a good gunsmith in East Kent? The guy who I normally go to has hung up his tools. Scully
A lot of them are shellacked or varnished, and are not brass or any type of precious metal. Just remove the finish from it and give it a buff up. Anyone who engraves trophies will be able to engrave your initials on it.
margun
Thanks Scully, do you have any tips for removing the finish on it? I thought about a dreamer but might damage the surrounding wood?
Gunman
Just careful application of fine abrasive [400 minimum] to get through the varnish that usualy coats them and then gentle buffing .
sishyplops
Take the stock and action into the engraver and arrange for him to do it while you wait, saves removing it
Gunman
I don't know if I have misunderstood the last post but have you ever tried removing an oval and replacing it? Also if you are not in attendance when it is being engraved then the engraver is holding a shot gun or parts thereof illegally . Only way would be to take the stock only . margun
Thanks for replies all, I used a bit off wet and dry folded, using just the corner to take away the delaminated part. Needs a polish up - doesn't look gold anymore but silver. Next stop engravers...

Gunman
That's why trade engravers have RFDs and blackers and checkerers and boreres etc. Edited December 1, 2014 by Gunman
margun
Sell it and buy a Browning. Much better guns. Lol, if I could afford a heritage then sure! Have always found Beretta suit me better. Had a medallist (not real browning I know) and couldn't get on with it.
Westley
Can I suggest that what has made the normally silver coloured oval appear gold, could well have been dried and hardened stock oil. This could have been removed by application of meths on a clean rag and some gentle rubbing. The problem is when applying stock oil, it is almost impossible to miss the oval. It is easier to apply stock oil until desired finish is obtained and THEN clean the oval.
jmoz82
It should of read Sell it and buy a Browning. Much better guns For hitting fence posts in with as it takes one to hit one lol

This is why I said arrange for him to do it while you wait ergo you are there with it and your licence, this negates removing the oval in the first place, hence you do not have to remove it
