Daveo26
Right first time out with my new browning 525 on Saturday. Got through quite a few cartridges! Iv got a mix in my cartridge belt most are 32 g 6s all fibre wads. Noticed something abit odd. I had a eley high flier in the bottom barrel (shot first) and a gamebore super game high bird in the the top. First shot both same load and shot size. I honestly thought the second shot was a dud, definite difference in felt recoil, I checked the barrel after all clear. Had the same thing with a fiocchi 32/6 and another eley, It's everytime. Basically eley VIPs and high fliers seem to kick like hell and the other brands are really, really gentle. What's going on? Iv used exactly the same through a baikal and Lincoln o/u and can hardly notice any difference between different cartridges, Could it be the back bored barrels not liking eley? Or is that just a marketing gimmick?
Big Mat
Some cartridges kick more than other, it happens
Daveo26
Yes large Matthew I know that, what's odd is the felt difference is only noticeable on the browning, which is the first gun I have owned with back bored barrels. The other 3 guns iv just the same jumble of cartridges through have never felt so different,
sishyplops
Check the fps of your carts, those Ely high flyers are a fairly rapid cartridge, more speed forward meens more speed backwards as well

fieldwanderer
Lighter gun or maybe just lighter barrels, I suppose either could make the difference more noticeable?
Daveo26
According to the makers.... Eley 1246 fps, it's listed in meters per sec, hence the strange fps figure. Gamebore, 1350fps So that throws that theory. Perhaps eley are just horrible in this particular gun.
Daveo26
Lighter gun or maybe just lighter barrels, I suppose either could make the difference more noticeable?Just odd how some feel to recoil less and some recoil more than any other gun iv used these carts in.You'd sort of expect a recoil reduction to be right across the board, weird
casts_by_fly
you need to check the actual velocity coming out of the barrel. I just sold my mossberg for this reason. With the backbored barrels, I was losing a bunch of speed from fiber wad cartridges. I measured the same cartridges through my mossberg and O/U (standard barrel ID) and I was loosing 300-400 fps which wasn't acceptable for shooting steel. Plastic wad was no issue. I would assume a fiber wad with plastic obturator would be fine also. My hypothesis is that the fiber wads don't fill enough of the bore and gasses are escaping up around the wad and shot column whereas a plastic wad base can expand to fill all or most of the barrel ID. thanks. rick
Daveo26
Well they would be sub sonic then wouldn't they? If that's the case, I'll have to stick to eleys!
sishyplops
Might be powder type , some burn slower but longer some give a quick flash bang, any home loaders here that can add any detail to these thought?
Westley
Try Hull Superfast 29 gram felt wads, excellent cartridge. Do you really need 32 gram ? Edited December 2, 2014 by Westley
grrclark
Did you shoot the Eley cartridge from both barrels and if so was the felt recoil similar from both?

Do you really need 32 gram ?Iv just bought some hull 28g felts imperial game I think. So I'll let you know!!Did you shoot the Eley cartridge from both barrels and if so was the felt recoil similar from both? Yes same felt recoil, tried hi flier top and bottom. I wondered that too! Westley
Hull Imperial game are the only cartridges that I will put through my English SxS which weighs 6lbs 2ozs. I use both 28 and 30 gram without any felt recoil. The cartridges suit my gun and are very clean. You should be pleased with their performance. JohnfromUK
I have found Eley VIP to have noticeably higher perceived recoil than the equivalent Hull (both Comp X and Imperial game). Presumably due to a different burn speed.
casts_by_fly
Well they would be sub sonic then wouldn't they? If that's the case, I'll have to stick to eleys! No, the speed of sound is ~1050 fps. The cartridges were doing in excess of 1500 from the o/u, so even dropping 400 they would still be above Mach 1. Try Hull Superfast 29 gram felt wads, excellent cartridge. Do you really need 32 gram ? They were one of the cartridges I tried as I shoot them to good effect in my other guns. The mossberg didn't like them either. Rick
