Children with Cancer UK

I would not usually moan about a charity but this outfit has me somewhat miffed. After seeing their latest TV advert I donated £3 by texting the required word and thought no more of it. About an hour later they called my mobile and, after a quick thank you for donating, asked if I would donate £120!. I explained that,as a family, we got together on new years day and chose a charity between us-we then set up a direct debit for £50/month over the following year and that I would suggest Children with Cancer for the following year. At hearing this the man decided to simply ask for £60 instead-I repeated my method of donating but then he asked if he could just take £5/month from my mobile as he already had my number-by now I was getting peed off with his hard sell and told him I was going to hang up,which, after another couple of minutes of listening to him trying to get money from me, I did. Whilst I am sympathetic towards most volunteers who collect for charities I never thought I would experience calls like this.

I hate the aggressive hard sell from charities. I especially despise those who employ high street chuggers. Ill never forget seeing a cocky youth trying to bully and cajole a pensioner into a standing order he clearly couldn't afford and didn't want to sign up to.

We have a CAF (charity aid foundation) account and cheque book. We like to chop and change who we support, but those who use aggressive tactics get short shrift.

I dont ever give a penny to charity now as it's big tax free business as already mentioned, what I do however is give my time to a local hospice for free and volunteer for them when I'm able to,that way I know exactly where my effort goes and see directly how it is beneficial rather than percentages being skimmed off here and there by every tom, **** and Harry, I know what my time is worth and what I am saving them with my labour and skills

This happened to me after giving some money towards a cancer charity following the death of my Mother nearly 2 years ago. He was pleasant enough, but very persistent, the outcome of which resulted in me hanging up.

Two charities we donate too are the Anthony Nolan trust and DBA uk because our family have four sufferers of DBA and a bone marrow transplant might be an option for my son if all else fails. I can't comment on what Anthony Nolsn do with there money but I know DBA uk uses there's for research into the illness and holding weekends at the likes of pgl where the kids can do all the activities while the parents learn what's been happening within the research as it's a really rare disorder. All this is free if charge but you're welcome to donate and everyone within the charity I believe are volunteers as the committee changes yearly amongst the parents and carriers.

It's always interesting to see how much of the money gets directly to the cause, and is not swallowed up by administration and wages. I recall a few years ago a work colleague was accompanying his wife to her works Christmas party. It was to be held at a large well known hotel in London, everything was paid for, including travel expenses. His wife worked for an animal charity, and I pointed out that the cost of this annual bash was being paid for by the volunteers giving up their free time rattling tins, and old ladies leaving their savings in the belief that they are giving some old cat or dog a home for life. Charity is unfortunately big business.
