Rupert
Screens and devices are part of life not your whole life, Set rules engage him in other stuff and if it get sticky cut the plug off. I took this approach and taught them skiing then snowboarding. We learned to scuba dive together, lad now makes a living guiding around the world but the lass loathed it, we went indoor kart racing together, I loved that for 7 yrs and won some stuff at national level. My point is I made them do/learn stuff and I learned stuff on the way, sure there were tantrums and tears. I hope it enriched there lives and I know it enriched mine.Downside is it cost a fortune,And to the OP these kids were not mine either, Sometimes it caused problems with the ex there mother. Olliesims
As little as possible, I spent most of my younger days sat in front of a pc playing games for anywhere between 5-12 hours a day, it's not till now I realise how much time I wasted for nothing, I rather my kids did something productive like reading, puzzles, making things
Davyo
My oldest son got bored with the likes of Xbox purley due to me not allowing him to play certain games ( from what I here some of these games are pure evil and sick ) .My youngest got the Xbox one for Christmas with some Lego games and a game called mine craft, but is pressuring me for other games ( been told it will go in the wheele bin). I know he will get bored with it ( like he did with his xbox and wwii thing)but only plays for about an hour a night. My concern is the amount of grown men who play on these things. islandgun
how many of us spend hours watching rubbish on the TV, or far to long on the internet perhaps on forums etc
Zetter
I personally think that there is something strange/weird about adults that play with childrens toys like x box or playstation I could say this about a few hobbies personally each to their own though. When I was gaming a lot I made a fair few new friends from a lot of different countries including Sweden, Israel, Finland the USA and Greece even went to Sweden for a couple of weekends off the back of it to meet us with some of them after an invite from some of the guys and girls I used to game with. No different to any other hobby in my opinion if you know where the off switch is or someone is there to tell you when you are too young to be responsible yourself. I'm sorry, but how can a game be evil? Anyway, there's nothing wrong with playing a game or two. I'd certainly rather do that than be watching Eastenders or the like! If that's true then I would classify that as sick also would state that the makers are sick.

Davyo
Even if that's true, does it make a game evil? Are all films that portray gruesome murders/rape evil? My concerns is that,it is clearly evident that young children are playing these games with the concent of parents. My son who is 10 keeps harping on about he wants to play games all his mates play. The rape thing I just can't understand why some sicko would incorporate that into a game,as if killing people with chainsaws or guns and stealing cars isn't enough. At the End of the day games have age ratings same as films don't like that it contains strong language and violence then don't play/watch it, kids are only playing games like that because there parents buy them what they want Edited January 6, 2015 by Olliesims
