a quick question... new gun not proofed?

bit of a back story to this, so here it is.

a gun was ordered from a RFD, and when it arrived all was ok.

the gun developed a fault and had to go back to the importer/manufacturer.

after a weekand a half a phonecall was made to the RFD to find out the situation of said gun, and if he had any news.

the apologetic RFD stated that thjere had been a mix up and the gun had accidentaly been sent to the proof house by 'mistake' and it was on its way back to them so that they could re-send it to the correct place.

2 weeks later, the gun is back and fixed so collection is arranged. upon inspection, a proof house marked has now been freshly etched onto the bolt of the gun (its a semi auto), and underneath the barrel now has some proof markings etched onto it (both were definately were not there before)

does that sound a bit odd to anyone on here? possibly that the gun had missed proof and the mistake was realised when the gun came back faulty?

if so, is it worth questioning it with the RFD?

yes.

well, either that or it wasnt done the first time.

there was a wait when the gun was ordered as apparently the gun needed to be proofed when it came into the country.

i can see potential issues with both scenarios, but not particulary clued up on the proofing of guns so thought i would ask on here as i know there are some people who may be able to pass comment with more knowledge than i have on the subject.

One possible explanation could be that when you returned the gun, the RFD noticed it hadn't been proofed. He would be committing an offence by selling someone an unproved gun and as he had already done so by selling it to you, he possibly sent it for proofing. This may be the reason he hasn't suggested you pay for this ( I'm assuming he hasn't asked you ) someone has had to, obviously, unless of course the proof house has acknowledged his call with a 'oops, send it back sharpish'. :)

The other explanation is of course that it was accidentally sent to the proof house as he has said, though it would be interesting to find out the reason why the proof house would re-proof an almost new gun after seeing it had only recently been proved. :ninja:

I had a Sako Quad HMR that didn't have any proof marks anywhere,

I had the barrel shortened and when I came to sell it I had to get it reproofed (another story)

When it came back it had 3 brand new proof marks,

I never queried it and they didn't say anything

Wouldn't worry about it

thats what im thinking to be honest and if that is the case i wouldnt have been too bothered had they actually told me... just seems a bit suspicious.

So what was the gun? If a gun is sent to the proof house with instruction to proof they will proof it .

beretta semi auto...

They also keep records of everything that has gone through, time to ask the proof house!

can i just email them and ask them?

if it was a foreign gun it's quite possible that it was proofed in the country of origin, .my benelli has their proof markings, not the English marks.

it was a beretta, but i checked my FIL's M2 last night and that has only got benellis proof marks on it too.

its just a bit strange that i was told originally that the delay after i ordered it was down to the gun needing proofing once in the uk, but then it not having english proof marks until coming back after the first repair.

I reckon they've just fluffed up the order and sent your gun by mistake, then doing a funny job of covering up the mistake. I would have thought beretta would proof their own guns too before they leave the factory.
