Duds
Has anyone tried catching carp on the fly ?
r1steele
There was a few carp put into one of my local lakes by mistake and I, along with a few others, was asked to try and catch them to put them into another pond. I caught quite a few and they fought nice and hard. Small buzzers and dries worked well.
Paul taylor
I've cheated a little and used fly rod with a dog biscuit glued onto a size 10 hook. Good fun they put a right bend inthe rod!
Penelope
Dog biccy flies. Use real ones as loose feed and get the carp competing for them. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=dog+biscuit+flies

You realise it's against the law to transfer fish from one water to another without appropriate tests for disease?
pegasus bridge
I used bread flake on the surface with a fly rod, caught half a dozen up to 7 lb, great fun on a light fly rod!
r1steele
You realise it's against the law to transfer fish from one water to another without appropriate tests for disease? Yes. It was all done within the same complex of newly built ponds with one pond being spring fed and the others being gravity fed from then on. The carp were put into the trout lake by mistake and then were taken out to go into the appropriate one. There was only carp from the same batch of fish in the lake they were going into but needed removing before the trout could go in. The person overseeing the stocking allowed some fish to be released into the wrong lake but got stopped after only a handful went in so was able to put the rest into the correct pond which then led to the catching and moving of the fish from the (not yet stocked) trout lake. Did you catch them all? There is a guy who fishes for them on the fly at a local place to me, he turns up with a big bag of dog biscuits, gets them in to a feeding frenzy and catches them on a fly which I can only describe as a very small hedgehog. Quite amusing watching him catch loads in a couple of hours when others are sat behind bite alarms and three rods.

I tie a few flies for people that regularly fly fish for them and I use white deer hair which is spun and trimmed to look like a bread flake or natural/brown to look like a dog biscuit which as you say looks like a small hedgehog. I've never cast a fly and I probably shouldn't try it as I have a shed full of carp, barbel, and pike tackle along with all my shooting stuff. I can see why it works for carp though. No heavy controller or bubble float crashing through the water plus it must be so easier to cast to individual fish.

Never fished for them apart from that one time but seeing a trout cruising about or a rising fish, casting over/in front of it and then see it take is nicer than fishing blind. Can't beat a nice wild brownie sipping away and then grabbing your fly as it comes over him.
krwigan
I seen a vid on utube where a guy roll casts a pellet up to a island and fishes it dhsllow just like you would on a pole or pellet wag. Never tried it myself but I imagine it would be good sport and a good take on fly gear. Will never beat that rise or tug on the river. Perfecto

numpty
I have fly fished for carp for many years but the usual remark from other anglers when they see me fishing is that there are no trout in the water. Last laugh is when you hook a nice big double figure lunker that makes the rod earn it's crust. Dog biscuit and bread fly's work great but I tend to stick with large buzzers now, even caught river carp on the upper Ouse, now that is fun! Cranfield
I have caught a lot of carp on the fly, by design and by accident. Also tench, rudd and perch . By choice I choose the locations carefully, as trying to bully a big carp away from snags on a fly rod is not as easy as it is with a 3lb test curve carp rod. A friend fishes for pike with a fly rod, large feathered lures and a light wire trace.
Berettacocker
As said before dog biscuit imitation made from deer hair trimmed with scissors into shape and fished on top amongst real dog biscuits. Also bread fly, as above, but use white deer hair or foam. Great fun!
