Willow32
At the end of the season my lab has started to whine when picking up...he has now started whining when roost shooting. ...so far he is still quite in the hide. I started to give him a tap when he started but been told not to do that as a tap will turn into a slap. I was thinking about getting him a spray collar and use it each time he starts.? His whining is down to excitement , is there any training methods I could use durring close season to get him ready for the next? Regards Willow32
eddoakley
Not able to help but would be interested in what advice you get as the mrs' lab/collie has started whining. She says he has never done it before but its definitely getting frustrating.
bigbird
Yep, put him in the situation he usually whines in and give him no exciting end result. On a serious note whining as you know is a sign of anticipation but VERY hard to stop once instilled. Ive not encountered this particular problem myself but I suppose I would do some retrieve drills but let him have very few himself - go and pick most of them up yourself whilst he's wearing a spray collar, that kind of thing. Like I say it's nigh on impossible to stop once started from what I've seen and heard. I guess a spray collar might help but if you're in the hide with him when you get home your missus is going to think you're having an affair hahaha Edited February 16, 2015 by bigbird

Regards Willow32 Harsh though it sounds, from what I've read; any form of chastisement needs to be quite harsh first off (enough to shock the dog a bit but obviously not enough to do any harm) or you end up in a situation of starting off quite tame and progressively getting harder and all the time the dog's getting used to it - so it never really has much effect even when it gets to the point you're beating the dog black and blue because it's not really much different to last time Mine was terrible for pulling on the lead for the first six months or so (I got her at 9mths), I tried everything but never seemed to get anywhere. There was a path through to a playing field where I walk / train her and that's where she really did used to go overboard. I was at the end of my tether and decided maybe it was time to try a harder line. I slapped her side, admittedly harder than I intended, and physically chucked her into the bushes for good measure - I went too far (to my shame) but it does prove the point; She doesn't go too far with the pulling now and, if she ever really steps out of line, I need only hold my hand up and crouch as though I'm going to slap her and it's clear she's got the message - It was harsh but I only needed to do it ONCE and will never need to do it again. That said, I don't think it's the answer for whining and really don't know what is - my springer's recently started it too but only before we leave the house or if we're laid up somewhere for a long time with a rifle, I'd still like to nip it in the bud though
Proudly
My spaniel has developed the same although he had never sat in a hide before I got him. It gets that annoying that I've had to return him to the car after chastising him hasn't worked. I'm going back to basics with his training & hope I can get him to be more patient
PERCE
He's not handled the pressure / anticipation of the picking up situation, hence making the noise. There's a lot reasons why this could happen. I suspect that sooner or later he'll crank up in the hide as well. You can do whatever you like to him but he'll never 100% stop doing it. You can only hope to work out a way of managing it, you need to break the dogs focus on what is happening around him, distract him. Either learn to live / work with it or leave him at home. loriusgarrulus
You could try a cold water spray bottle and spray him in the face when he starts whining. This often works for barking and might be worth a try for whining. Some dogs like being sprayed, but fortunately not many.
jonniemax426
hi, I would try taking your dog for some real good exercise before you go roost shooting.. knackered him/her out before you lay up for long periods. Worked with my lab.

WGD
I would doubt you'll reliably stop it, and if you do you'll be the first I know of who can.
Proudly
Can only try & if he wont settle he'll be left at home on decoying days.
