Blackpowder
Today a pigeon accidently flew into my shot pattern when it was having an inspection of my decoy set. That was unusual for a start but on picking it up I thought it had accumulated a huge clods of soil on each leg. Taking a closer look it was apparent that these 'clods' were in fact crusty scaly growths both bleeding to some extent, otherwise the bird seemed in good condition. I do have photographs but my patience and on line skills does not extend to putting those up on P.W. Anyone else seen those growths, and what are they? fenboy
I have seen various growths on them over the years , some of which make you think you have done them a favour.

JDog
I am sure that you singled that one out for dispatch to put it out of it's misery.
Penelope
Perhaps some form of canker caused by scale mites. http://poultrykeeper.com/external-problems/scaly-leg-mite
dougall
or maybe like a handicapped horse race it was weighted to slow it down so you could shoot it...you know like those 'easy' townie pigeons?..
Blackpowder
Perhaps some form of canker caused by scale mites. http://poultrykeeper.com/external-problems/scaly-leg-mite Yep looks very much like that and certainly scaly, you could be spot on with that. Penelope
I was aware of it from when I kept canaries when I was younger. Yep looks very much like that and certainly scaly, you could be spot on with that. Thanks Blackpowder
the hitman
Perhaps this wasn't the first time this pigeon had visited a decoy pattern , and took some shot but carried on , but the pellets caused the growths .
Bogwoppit
Have you ever looked at the feet of ferals in the town? Looks similar to what you describe.
