A lovely day in the woods

Recommended Posts

Mrs was working today so I thought I'd go for a wander in the woods with my .22 and see if I could bag a bunny or two.

After spending a bit of time getting a zero as the PW weekend spanking had thrown me off I had only walked about twenty yards from the truck when I heard something making its way through the woods to my left. Thinking it might be a fox as it's usually a good spot I stood silently and a few minutes later a cracking Muntjac came out and was literally ten yards away, it was definite medal buck. We stood and stared at each other for what felt like forever and it was killing me standing so still so when he barked he took every bit of self control not to jump. As I'd gone out with just the rimfire and a .40 grain hollow point is probably a bit under gunned I'd also not bought my call so had a go at attempting one myself. This seemed to confuse him as he didn't leg it but swayed his head from side to side trying to get my scent. Another bark from me and he turned and sauntered off, he wasn't running just decided whatever I was I wasn't going to let him have his wicked way.

On the rest of the walk I saw another couple of Muntjacs but from a distance, and a few rabbits, one of which gave me the charge and ran straight at me only veering off at six or so feet. I then rounded a corner to see another rabbit at twenty or so yards which I managed to miss because I really can't shoot off hand!

All in all though a quality few hours and a reminder of just how much I love hunting/wandering and what a special time of year it is.

Nice one mate I had the same thing last night. Smacked a couple of bunnies with the HMR early on and then got within 30 yards Muntjac as I was down wind, until he finally saw me and wandered of nonchalantly.

Then I stuck the night visions on and waited for some more bunnies but the only one that presented itself was skylined so he lived to munch another day. However I was treated to the sight of two badgers about 15 yards away who decided to have a fair old punch up of something they found to eat which was fun to watch and probably explained the bunny absence.

Finally on the way back to the car probably the same Muntjac from earlier scared the hell out of me by barking what felt like right next to my ear on a very still night and nearly giving me a heart attack!

It was a really still night last night and quite warm probably one of the best nights I have had out for a couple of months.

I have a 100acre wood I can shoot in and I love a Sunday morning wonder.

I've seen a few muntys and had one of which I've just eaten :)

On my last wonder I had 3 birds with the shotty in 5 shots and I'd also had 4 bunny and a squirrel a week previous . My mates wonder why I go there as it's not bursting with life but it's just a beautiful walk round. The owner is brilliant and is making me a high seat for the bottom of his wood. It takes me 2 1/2 hours to walk a lap and I love it. I even take the kids there for a walk and to pick apples, blackberries .

not to mention unlawful

Just for the avoidance of doubt I was being flippant, what we need is an irony button.

Muntjac are very much the Jack Russell of the deer world in my opinion, they have no idea how small they are and have a proper little attitude to them. Great character, sadly also great eating...
