darren m
why on some oil filters is there a bypass valve inside??
fruity
I find it's usually more modern vehicles have a bypass valve on the filters not olders ones ?
deershooter
If the filter got blocked it would starve the engine of oil causing damage Deershooter
oliver90owner
Deershooter is on the money. An 'excuse' to fit smaller items, so cost, I suppose. That would be cost as in cheaper to produce, less weight to cart around for the life of the vehicle, less circulating lube and maybe more - like under-bonnet space. Cannon
The bypass valve ensures the engine can't get starved of oil even if the filter is clogged. The oil pressure will reduce if the filter gets clogged. If I remember correctly, the bypass valve needs the correct amount of oil pressure to keep it open. Once the oil pressure drops due to a clogged or damaged filter, the valve closes (it could be the other way around) This allows the oil to effectively bypass the filter so that the engine has a constant supply of pressurised oil. stewartward
Dirty oil is better than no oil if filter is blocked
bornfree
Some engines have an inbuilt bypass valve some have it in the filter.
Westward
Also needed to maintain adequate oil pressure on engines with hydraulic tappets. It's usually better to buy original equipment rather than cheaper compatibles if there's a bypass valve involved.
darren m
thanks for the info , that might explain why my oil pressure gauge as been all over the place just latley
