I always was of the understanding that if a bullet started off supersonic then the problem arises once it reaches the transonic zone it will then start to become unstable as the gyroscopic spin decreases. Not all will as you no doubt know being into long range shooting.

If a bullet starts off subsonic then it doesn't have the same problem, yet it will tumble eventually as it slows.

But what has the transonic stage got to do with a bullet that is all ready subsonic ???

If you read the link you see evidence that it is not a rule!

On the subject of spin a lot of study reveals a lot of evidence to suggest a bullet will stop going forward before it ever ceases to spin!

I watched Magpul video on the Art of the Precision Rifle

shots at 1200yds and a mile with a .308 (that is well past transonic and into sub sonic)

18" plate - multiple hits

comes down to bullet choice most of the time

Yes, also how ever did they go on with the 45/70, 45/110 and the like! Many a long range target event is conducted with them and they only just start off just above sound!

Nothing at all it will remain stable this in the case of a .22 sub. Stingers or WMR will enter a transonic zone though. It doesn't always effect accuracy the same way when a bullet slows and enters the transonic zone, its dependant on factors like air pressure and other stuff we cant easily predict.

Actually shooting, well one swallow don't make a summer and only repeatability is relevant. The less predictability the lower the accuracy. Its like shooting a five shot screamer with a gun that's a reliable 1/2 MOA gun one day (it hasn't suddenly improved) or shooting a group outside the 1/2MOA (the likely hood is it aint busted). Accuracy is repeatability!

Any who have actually competed at 1000 yards more than once with a .308 will get this to others I accept its goboldy gook. One day it goes great another unbelievably bad, depends on those unpredictable factors (I have BTW) but its just as relevant at far lesser range with any rim fire round that leaves the muzzle above the speed of sound, under and you will have no issue with transonic.
