Blackpowder
SBS have been around since muzzle loading days. No doubt there were O/U then also but I have never seen an example. Blackpowder

Scully
There are examples of O/U wheel-locks in existence, and as they're muzzle loaders could be loaded with either shot or ball.
compo90
Didn't browning invent the over and under or superposed barrels about 100 years ago?

Gunman
O/U's have been around since the wheel lock .The problem with O/U muzzle loaders is self evident as priming pans would lose powder very easily . They were not really a practical firearm until the development of the self contained cartridge and as the earliest guns we would recognise as a modern O/U were hammer guns built by men who only knew SxS's and as a result were SxS's with O/u Barrels . There were several makers who attempted to produce practical and functional O/Us but the credit must go to J M Browning' s 1925 design the B25 first produced in quantity by FN in 1931as the first truly modern and successful O/U still in production [but only just ] that is the forbear of all O/Us since . The basic design still used by Miroku with little modification .
