Pssa-pete
I have just started the search for another rifle scope, which I intend to put on a sporter 22lr rifle which will be used predominantly for close range low light vermin / pest controll, and a bit of informal 25/50 m target shooting plinking. I have a fairly extensive collection of scopes, some of which are well suited to either the task of close range and target work, others are better suited to the field 50m+ and in low light. I have compared all my current scopes , both for their abilities in low light,(definition in a shadowy hedgerow)and the ability to focus close in with both image and reticle in focus and my findings though subjective are as follows., Mtc mamba 3-12x44, clear and focused at any range, poor low light performance even on 3 power. Schmidt 8x56 30mm, superb low light, won't focus close Schmidt 8x56 1" same as above Schmidt 6x42 good low light performance, just about useable focus 25m Docter 6x42 as above Meopta meostar r1 3-10x50 super low light, poor close focus Night force Nsx 5-22 50 , not tried it close, clear in daylight, useable on low mag in low light ( not as clear as schmidt in daylight Schmidt zenith 3-12 50 .fd 7 . Good low light, useable close up on low mag. The mtc and the night force are predominantly used for target so low light performance is irrelevant , most of the other scopes are on stalking/ foxing/vermin rifles so the close range performance is rarely an issue, I have had a number of budget scopes on 17s and 22s in the past and all of them have had their shortcomings with regard to either low light or close performance . I would be interested to hear other peoples opinions on low light close range scopes suitable for my given application ,
ZG47
Get the parallax reset to 75yards on your Schmidt and Bender 6x. That will bring your close focus distance down to 15 or 16 meters. This is a remedy that we have been using locally for at least two decades (and possibly a lot longer). If you do it to one of your 8x scopes the distance might be closer to 20 meters. Alycidon
My rimfire carries a Ziess Dia Vari C, 3 x 9 x 36, perfect scope for any sub 250 yard caliber. Now sure how close it would come down to but the focus is adjustable, parallax is set at 100m which I have never found to be an issue. welshwarrior
I've used a 6x42 S&B with out issue on a 22lr but prefer the 4x36 at those ranges and its weight.
Caravanman
I've got a Vortex Rimfire 2-7x35. Nice little scope.
Richie092
I have a Leupold Fx3 6x42 on mine. Only shoot it up the club and can't really get it to focus so I guess that will be going on the 308 and I will start looking for something that just suits 25m. Shame really it is a lovely scope. I have contacted schmidt and bender for a quote and lead time to get one of my scopes adjusted and nitrogen purged I don't think any of scope I own surpasses the simple schmidt klassiks for clarity or low light performance so it would be nice to own one specifically set up for 22lr. saddler
Burris Fastfire III red dot on my Buckmark carbine. In the past I've also used various Aimpoint scopes on other semi-autos. On bolt guns I've mainly used S&B 6x42 or equivalents. Some have had older period scopes (Mossberg, Weaver, Lyman, Unertl, etc.)

I have had word back from schmidt in Germany , they have quoted €67 plus postage for a parallax adjustment clean and re gas with a 4-6 week lead time, so I intend to send it in in the next week . Sounds like a very good deal, mate. Almost makes me wish that I lived that close to them BUT .... I prefer the relative warmth of our lower latitudes. Dekers
I have had word back from schmidt in Germany , they have quoted €67 plus postage for a parallax adjustment clean and re gas with a 4-6 week lead time, so I intend to send it in in the next week . Seems a reasonable price, what gun are you stealing the scope from then, and what will you replace that with? Why not simply start again with a half decent new air rifle scope! This will put Parallax in the right place to start with and give you close focus, and there is plenty of choice for not much money. Too many people slag off cheap scopes today because they were rubbish years back, on the whole, most people would be surprised at the quality of optics/light transmission, even engineering of many of the modern cheap scopes! PS What's wrong with this one from your list anyway.... Schmidt zenith 3-12 50 .fd 7 . Good low light, useable close up on low mag. kennym
You seam to like the MTC as do I, however the mamba is the basic model & the glass on the viper & Genesis models are better why not try them?
Savhmr
For my 22Lr zero'd to 75 yds I use a humble Nikko Sterling Gameking 4-9x40 scope and it does the job fine, and is even ok out to dusk. For the HMR I used to have an MTC Viper but didn't find it a lot of good. So-so build quality, optics were not up to the price tag imho. Also tried an entry level Leupold which again wasn't worth the money. Ended up using a Bushnell Elite 4200 with Rainguard optic coatings. Great scope, variable zoom out to 24 times but optimal at between 7 and 12 times for most ranges that I shoot at (up to 200 yds). I use a 4 x 40 WA Stirling Bisley De Lux on the WMR which has served well for many years. Lovely bright image If money was no object, it'd be a 6 x 42 or 8 x 56 prime scope from Schmidt or Ziess. Some of the Philippines made Simmons scopes are also worth a shout, as are the Nikon range. Edited June 13, 2015 by Savhmr
