Good day on flattened wheat - 86 shot

Had a scout round on Wednesday evening as had several permissions I had not been round recently. Found pigeons flooding into one field of wheat on one of my permissions. On closer inspection there were several flat patches including one headland. Phoned the farmer and happy for me to have a go. Looked at weather and although wind was faster on Friday the wind direction suited the field options better on Thursday, so went Thursday. The field is quite narrow and close to a busy road (A41) which is also a busy flightline. Positioned myself with the road 150 yards to my right and the wind coming in at 11oclock with a flat circle of wheat at 11oclock about 30 yards out and 12 yards wide, and flat wheat on headland to my left and right. Plan was to take first shot as they came towards the pattern and second shots as they flared over headland/hedge. Set up by 9:30 with 2 flappers, each in a clump of 8 shelled decoys on the flat headland, one set just to my right only 10 yards out from the hide and the second 20 yards to my left.... Had steady traffic all morning but more birds were coming into oaks around the field than committing to the decoys. Birds started flaring away and I noticed one flapper had broke so only flapping one wing like a wounded pigeon...switched that off and moved the remaining flapper into the middle of the pattern. By 12 I had 40 shot and I replaced all decoys with dead birds. Decided to try the magnet, so returned to truck for it. No room at front of pattern so placed at back of pattern in middle of flattened wheat patch. I have modified the magnet to take three different length mid-sections so can adjust height. Set on lowest height so just above ground. Pulled more birds in that had previously headed towards surrounding trees but many swooped around the magnet making for some difficult shots. Traffic slowed to a trickle by 3 and packed up at 4. Had some nice doubles and some high birds. Finished with 86 shot from 140 shots. Picked 71 largely thanks to the dog who recovered at least 10 from the field margin behind the hedge and 20 from the standing crop. Poor dog was kn****** by the end. Farmer was happy ..... so a good day.
