Bringing my younger brother shooting.

Recommended Posts

I am probably going to get alot of stick for this but i need the answer to it as i can't find it anywhere so i will say it anyway. I am 18 years old and live in Northern Ireland and my younger brother is age ten now. Very young i know and it is quite hard to explain but for his age he is very mature. I started shooting at the age of 15 and at the age of 16 me and my dad let my brother aged 8 at the time, shoot the air rifle and we taught him all safety and dangers and he took it on board amazingly and really surprised me at the groupings he was getting. We were out one day just me and my dad and younger brother and me and my dad were shooting a few clays with his semi-auto and he asked if he could have a shot so i wrapped my jumper that i had on around his shoulder and we threw out a clay for him and he hit it. Since then every time we had out the shotgun he always got a turn. The following christmas we had quite a big family clay shoot with about 15 of us shooting and we had a competition and keeping scores to which he finished 3rd at the age of 9. And we were throwing 2 out of the trap for quite a few and more than half the time he managed to hit both. He is not your normal 10 year old and he is always helping on the farm and for his age he is very strong and well built probably due to all the work he does (graiping in silage to lots of cows and watering sheep. When my dad and me are away if he is on his own and a ewe is lambing he would be able to catch and toss the ewe and lamb it himself and done than for 20 ewes this year and he enjoys working at sheep. He enjoys shooting and hunting and driving. And it may sound bad but when growing up on a farm it is something that we all have to do. So he helps and can draw silage and spread slurry and lift bales and that is his favourite part of farming and you need to be mature and sensible to do that sort of stuff. Now my predicament is... I want to take him out shooting with me a bit more but i would love him to have a gun and he likes my dads semi-auto even though it kicks alot more than my o/u as it is lighter but i can't take it out as it is on my dads permit. And my dad rarely has any time. So i would love to buy him a shotgun. I was thinking a nice light 20 gauge semi-auto. But i want to know is it legal to bring him hunting with me and let him use that gun under my supervision? Also if you were line shooting and spread out is there a certain distance i would need to be to him? I understand why someone would be wary if they seen a 10 year old out shooting crows with a shotgun unless i was right beside him. Sorry for such a long write up but i felt i would of got alot of abuse if i just said "can i legally buy and give my 10 year old brother a shotgun to go shooting?"

This would be the place to begin your enquiries regarding the legalities in your ‘neck of the woods’. http://basc.org.uk/northern-ireland/

And as for advice on shooting on a line in the field start with this, http://basc.org.uk/northern-ireland/

Sounds like a very promising young prospect your brother, good luck.

Regards

Thank-you i will check these out now. Yea it's a bit annoying on a good day he could beat me at clays!

Unfortunately, I'm pretty certain that for him to be using a shotgun, the supervising adult must be 21 or over.

(edit : pretty certain this also applies in Northern Ireland, exactly the same as it does to the rest of the UK)

I thought there might have been some sort of a law like that but wasn't sure.

Might still get him a nice 20 bore that doesn't kick soo bad and still get out with my dad every so often.

I am a little worried that my new hero might be 10 years old! He sounds like a champ and you sound like a great brother!

Yea he's pretty good so best keep him at it! Looking out more for myself though as i could do with another shooting buddy and it's a good excuse to buy another gun!

It's a mindset. I have another brother age 15 but he is hard to shift from the playstation! He has no real interest and he would need alot more training before i would trust him out shooting with me!

10 fine taught kids as young as 8 but using 11.6 except ground not sure of NI rules mind.

Yes, but here we've got an 18 year old who'd be the supervising adult. On mainland Britain that would be illegal, as the supervising adult must be 21 or over when shotguns are in use.

The Home Office notes do go through parts of the law where NI is different to ROUK, and this is not an area that they mention.

Using a clay ground with a S11 exemption, so non SGC's holders can shoot.

Thanks.

Dear All,

the law is different in NI - best guidance and contact details here: http://www.psni.police.uk/index/advice-and-legislation/firearms/advice_firearms_know_the_law.htm

and here: http://www.psni.police.uk/index/advice-and-legislation/firearms/firearm_certificate/advice_firearms_youth_permits.htm

Apologies but Tommy in the BASC NI office is not around for a few weeks, so emails will come to here so may take a tad longer to answer than usual

Marksman,

Check out the firearms act ref Young Persons and Shotguns. also look into Section 11/5 and 11/6 its an eye opener. Like David from Basc said Tommy from NI office will help.

Getting him a SGC would be a good start.

we coach kids under 10 so providing your legal, teaching him the right things and he enjoys it, fine!

get him to join BASC young shots program and book him into an intro day, clay shooting, air rifles, dog handling, falconry, pigeon decoying etc.

Best of luck,

Flycoy
