londonshooter
Hello, I have some land on a local farm which is a rough shoot I'm a member of. I'm interested to try some decoying but only have the gun as far as equipment. What is considered essential equipment for decoying and where should I get it from? Location wise I'm in London and shoot in essex. All help much appreciated. Thanks,

londonshooter
Thanks, would something like this make sense: http://www.a1decoy.co.uk/pigeon-shooting-starter-kit-1008-p.asp I see there are tent hides or the regular poles and nets... any reason to go for the tent? Shooterluke
I would go for poles an nets bud so you can make it how you want it with a tent your ristricted an may have to set up in a hedge row so poles and nets your best bet also the decoys in the picture arent flocked if they get wet they will shine making the birds flare Other than that its a good kit bud remember a1 have a discount for pw members if you go there route
The Juicer
Gun, decoys. I can hide in a hedge using these two at one location as the birds come from behind and can't see me. The improvement then is net and poles for birds coming from the front. I can sit on the bank. Failing that a seat and thermos adds luxury. Redditch
A good starting hide is one of those "one man" pop up hides with built in seat. I have enormous success with one of those, and very quick to set up when I'm just shooting on my own. Then you need some decoys, I would start with 12 pigeon and 3-4 corvid (crow) decoys. Then either a magnet or flapper. Starting off, I would go for a magnet, BUT, that's personal preference, as some days one will work, the other wont, some days, both will work, and some days neither will work. I tend to use 2 flappers and a magnet most days. On a really big day I will have 2-3 magnets and 4 flappers, 4--5 bouncers, and 30 pigeon plus 40 corvid decoys out LOL, BUT, that generally when I'm on stubble or freshly sown fields, and shooting with 2-3-4 other shooters. motty
I don't think any kit is essential. The essentials are gun and cartridges.

Motty aint far wrong.............i think we all get hot under the collar about shopping lists for shooting.............recently i have been having short 2 hour sessions on the way to the spar shop in lingwood.....i run the landy deep into the spinney then stand behind a young oak tree that is about 18"-2ft wide and just watch...the trick is to port your gun before they see you and KEEP STILL until the last second or so up-thro-bang...i dont have any cammo gear and im stll lucky.... The thing is, we can all take loads of gear with us, but the only thing REALLY needed are the gun and something to put in it. One local chap I know takes no gear and shoots more pigeons than most. He always uses natural hides and dead birds only. I suppose for him, an essential bit of kit is his machete, used for cutting down a few branches for the hide. Uncle Albert
If you can bury yourself in the hedge then you may not need a hide but it blocks the view of you from the front and blocks movement. An upturned bucket will act as a seat but not too comfy. Get some second hand decoys. You can buy flocking from the Internet and flock them yourself. Painting them with Bathroom/kitchen matt emulsion. One taster pot of black and one of white will do you all the shades of grey you could want.
