muncher
I have been busy of late with club duties and family events , so I thought I will have a look round and have a go even if it didn't look to good .After a while I found a few on some stubble with a broad flight line but they didn't seem to really want the field but with no other option decided I would have a little go .I set up with 4 dead birds two on the rotary ,no hide just got in the dyke so if it was poor I could pack up quickly .I shot 3 fairly quickly but it was very slow after that, but birds were still flighting up the field . My phone then rang twice one from my brother who had just finished work and came to join me, and Motty who was near by and had a fruitless search , so i told him to come over and have a shot or two and a chat, bring some chocolate with you (HE DID NOT) My brother went to the other side of the field as the pigeons were going by up that side not decoying and he was getting some steady shooting .Motty joined me and it was slow but we were taking the mick out of each other and chewing the fat .After a while my brother came over and said to Motty go in my hide for a while get some shots ,which he did . My brother suggested to take down the rotary as they seem spooky ,so down they came and the birds started to decoy a lot better or come for a look, meanwhile Motty was popping away and getting a few .The pigeons had started to come in more regularly now and the flight started to heat up and with a few eye wipes going on and mick taking gestures over the field to each other I had 46 on the clicker when my brother said ,there's a tractor just pulled in on this field and the farmer as well ,he was lined up to rip up the side we were set up on so a quick pick up and clear away .After a chat with the farmer we went over to Motty and helped him pick up and he said he had shot 33 ,my brother had shot some from this hide and an exact count wasn't done but 80 odd was about total picked .Had a good day and if the tractor hadn't turned up think a ton was on the cards . marsh man
Strange how they always pick the only field where a few pigeons are using , annoying but something we have to accept at least you managed to get a nice lot of sport . Good write up muncher. I had the reverse Saturday , I went on a field of wheat that had only been started on during the week before they got rained off , when I looked Friday there were some pigeons on there but not enough to get over excited about but with the uplands out of bounds I didn't have anywhere any better so I got there around dinner time , managed to drive up to the spot where I intended to shoot from , dropped off my gear and then went and parked my car up . I set up and it wasn't long before the first pigeon was in the bag , they had cut three strips around the field so the edge of the wheat was around 35yds from my hide , the magnet was set up on the edge of the wheat and the decoys on the stubble . I had shot about a dozen when a tractor came down the track and then onto the field where I was shooting , it stopped at the combine that was still on the field to drop the driver off and then came over to have a yarn , I was fully expecting him to say we are now going to make a start , but no he said it was still to damp on the marsh and they are going to cut a field of wheat on the uplands that was a bit dryer , so off they went leaving me to carry on with no activity from tractors or combines . I carried on shooting till 5 30 when the first drop of rain was felt and with the sky looking as black as the ace of spades it was time to get of before the rain made it a bit sticky and the chance of getting stuck . a nice afternoon and picked up 39 . lakeside1000
I was out on some fresh cut stubble last week, the lads were back and forth with trailers fetching in the bales, I had a dozen decoys and a flapper out which I had to move a couple of times to let them pick up in front of me, but it didn't put the birds off at all, as soon as the tractors were out of the field the birds were back, a bit of an on / off day with just 13 picked but plenty of birds in the air, just had to watch a lot float by as it was too dangerous to shoot, I think the birds knew they were safe so they came even closer, cheeky little birds. Sounds like the perfect day apart from the tractor !
muncher
Muncher, you are far too generous to your friend Motty. Maybe, but he is very entertaining all the excuses come out when he misses . I have nearly got him to a satisfactory standard now in field craft, but his etiquette training will take some time being a heathen and all.
